Ava Muhammad (born November 9, 1951 – died August 25, 2022) was an important American leader in the Nation of Islam (NOI). She made history in 1998 by becoming the first woman to lead a mosque and a whole region for the organization. Her role as the national spokesperson for Minister Louis Farrakhan was very important. It was a position once held by Malcolm X. Ava Muhammad was also part of the Muslim Girls Training (MGT), a group for women in the Nation of Islam.

Besides leading her local mosque, Ava Muhammad was also the Southern Regional Minister. This meant she was in charge of Nation of Islam activities in several states. These included Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and parts of Tennessee.

Early Life and Education

Ava Muhammad was born in 1951. She was a very smart student. In 1975, she earned her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. After that, she became a member of the New York Bar Association. This meant she was a licensed lawyer.

Career and Influence

In 1988, she married Darius Muhammad. She was a lawyer, but she also became a minister. She was the main spokesperson for Minister Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. This was a very public and important job.

Ava Muhammad was also a researcher and wrote several books. She hosted a weekly radio show called "Elevated Places." This show was broadcast every Sunday on WVON 1690AM in Chicago.

Overcoming Challenges

Dr. Muhammad was also a cancer survivor. She often spoke about how she overcame her illness. She shared her inspiring story to encourage others. She talked about her journey in great detail during Cancer Survivors Month in the United States.
