Avalon is a small community in Texas. It's not officially a city or town, but it's a place where people live and work together. It's located in the southern part of Ellis County, in the state of Texas, United States.
A Look at Avalon's Past
Farming Roots
Avalon has always been a farming community. It's found where two roads, FM 55 and TX Highway 34, meet in southern Ellis County. For a long time, Avalon has been known for growing a lot of cotton. It even has one of the few cotton gins left in the county. A cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds.
Before the 1930s and even now, Avalon's farms produced much of the cotton for Ellis County. In the 1830s, Ellis County was actually the world's top cotton producer! Avalon played a big part in that. Did you know that some scenes from the movie Places in the Heart were filmed in cotton fields just 2 miles north of Avalon?
Community Life and Schools
Avalon has had its own U.S. post office since 1937. The community has both an elementary school and a high school. The Avalon Independent School District helps educate students in the area.
In 2005, the Avalon high school football team started playing in the Texas Six Man Football program. Before that, Avalon was mostly known for its strong basketball teams. They had some of the best Class B/1A basketball teams from the 1960s through the 1990s. Avalon has also developed a good baseball team, making it to the playoffs several times.
A Big Project and a Storm
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Avalon was a key location for the Superconducting Super Collider project. This was a huge science project meant to study tiny particles. However, the government stopped funding the project, and it was never finished.
On April 25, 2011, a small tornado, called an EF0 tornado, touched down in Avalon. It caused only minor damage to the area.
