Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Rise of Kyoshi is an exciting fantasy novel for young adults. It was written by F.C. Yee and Michael Dante DiMartino, who also helped create the Avatar: The Last Airbender TV show. This book came out in July 2019.

The story is set in the same world as the popular Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon series. However, it takes place about 400 years before the adventures of Aang. The book focuses on the early life of Kyoshi, a powerful Avatar born in the Earth Kingdom. It's the first book in The Kyoshi Novels series and became a New York Times bestseller. The next book in the series, The Shadow of Kyoshi, was released in July 2020.

Discovering the Next Avatar

This story begins seven years after Avatar Kuruk passed away. His friends, Jianzhu and Kelsang, were searching for the next Avatar. Jianzhu was a wise Earth Kingdom leader, and Kelsang was a kind Air Nomad. They traveled across the Earth Kingdom, looking for a special child in Yokoya village.

Kyoshi was a young girl living in the village. She didn't have a home and had a tough life. She briefly joined the Avatar search test. But she wasn't used to people being kind to her, so she quickly left. Later, Kelsang took Kyoshi in and became like a father to her.

Kyoshi's Journey Begins

Nine years later, Kyoshi worked as a helper in a large house. This house was built for Yun, a teenager from the Earth Kingdom. Everyone believed Yun was the new Avatar, and he was a friend to Kyoshi.

However, things changed when Kyoshi showed amazing earthbending skills during a fight with pirates. This made people wonder if Yun was truly the Avatar. Jianzhu, who wanted to guide the new Avatar, believed only he could do it.

A difficult event happened where Yun and Kelsang were lost. This was a very upsetting time for Kyoshi. Because of this, Kyoshi entered the powerful Avatar State. She almost used her full power against Jianzhu. After this, Kyoshi ran away from the house with her friend Rangi. Rangi was a skilled firebender and had been Yun's bodyguard.

Mastering the Elements

During her journey, Kyoshi worked hard to improve her earthbending skills. She also began to learn how to master the other three elements: water, fire, and air. She wanted to become a fully realized Avatar and understand her true power. Her journey was about finding her strength and facing the challenges ahead.
