Michael Dante DiMartino, born on July 18, 1974, is an American animator, producer, writer, and director. He is most famous for creating the animated TV shows Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. He made these popular shows with his friend Bryan Konietzko for Nickelodeon.

Michael DiMartino's Career

Before he created Avatar, Michael DiMartino worked for 12 years at a company called Film Roman. There, he helped direct episodes of well-known shows like King of the Hill, Family Guy, and Mission Hill. He also made his own animated short film called Atomic Love. This short film was shown at many important film festivals.

Creating Avatar and Korra

In 2010, the president of Nickelodeon, Cyma Zarghami, announced that DiMartino and Konietzko were working on a new series. This show became The Legend of Korra. It was a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The Legend of Korra first aired on April 14, 2012. The first season, called "Book One: Air," had 12 episodes. The second season, "Book Two: Spirits," started on September 13, 2013. About 2.6 million people in the U.S. watched its first episode. After that, "Book Three: Change" and "Book Four: Balance" each had 13 episodes.

Writing Books

On October 4, 2016, DiMartino released his first novel, Rebel Genius. The story is about a 12-year-old boy named Giacomo. He finds out he has a magical 'Genius,' which is like the living spirit of an artist's creativity. This happens in a world where being artistic is against the law.

Working with Netflix and Avatar Studios

In September 2018, it was announced that DiMartino and Konietzko would be in charge of a live-action TV show. This show was a new version of Avatar: The Last Airbender for Netflix. However, on August 12, 2020, both creators shared that they had left the project. They said they had different ideas from the Netflix team about how the show should be made.

In February 2021, ViacomCBS announced a new company called Avatar Studios. This studio is part of Nickelodeon. Its goal is to create new animated series and movies set in the same world as Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are leading this new studio. Their first project is an animated movie that is planned to be released on January 20, 2026.
