Michael Dante DiMartino, born on July 18, 1974, is an American animator, producer, writer, and director. He is famous for co-creating the popular animated TV shows Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. He made these shows with Bryan Konietzko for Nickelodeon.

Michael DiMartino's Career

Early Work in Animation

Before creating Avatar, Michael DiMartino worked for twelve years at a company called Film Roman. There, he helped direct episodes for well-known animated shows. These included King of the Hill, Family Guy, and Mission Hill. He also made his own animated short film called Atomic Love. This short film was shown at several important film festivals.

Creating Avatar: The Last Airbender

DiMartino is best known for co-creating Avatar: The Last Airbender. He worked on this show with his friend and colleague, Bryan Konietzko. The show became very popular around the world. It tells the story of Aang, the last Airbender, who must bring balance to the world.

The Legend of Korra and Other Projects

After the success of Avatar, DiMartino and Konietzko developed a new series. This show was called The Legend of Korra. It continued the story in the Avatar universe, focusing on the next Avatar, Korra. The series first aired on April 14, 2012. It had four "books" or seasons: "Air," "Spirits," "Change," and "Balance."

On October 4, 2016, DiMartino released a new original novel. The book is titled Rebel Genius. It tells the story of a 12-year-old boy named Giacomo. In his world, artistic expression is against the law. Giacomo discovers he has a magical 'Genius,' which is like the living spirit of an artist's creativity.

Working with Netflix and Avatar Studios

In September 2018, it was announced that DiMartino and Konietzko would work on a live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender for Netflix. They were going to be the main producers for the show. However, on August 12, 2020, they announced they had left the project. This was because they had different ideas about the show's direction compared to the Netflix team.

In February 2021, ViacomCBS announced something exciting. They created Avatar Studios, a new part of Nickelodeon. This studio focuses on making new animated series and movies. All these new stories are set in the same universe as Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Both DiMartino and Konietzko are leading this new studio. The first movie from Avatar Studios is planned to be released on January 20, 2026.

Personal Life

Michael DiMartino was born in Shelburne, Vermont. He went to the Rhode Island School of Design. He graduated in 1996, having studied animation. It was at college that he met Bryan Konietzko, his future partner in creating the Avatar shows.
