Bryan Konietzko is a talented American animator, writer, producer, and director. He is famous for co-creating the popular animated TV shows Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. He worked on these shows with his creative partner, Michael Dante DiMartino.

Bryan Konietzko's Career Journey
Before creating Avatar, Bryan worked on other animated shows. He helped design characters for Family Guy and was an assistant director for King of the Hill. He also worked as a storyboard artist and art director for Nickelodeon's Invader Zim.
Creating the Avatar Universe
From 2001 to 2014, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino spent most of their time writing and producing the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. This show was a huge success for Nickelodeon. They then created its sequel, The Legend of Korra. Fans often call their creative team "Bryke."
New Projects and Avatar Studios
In 2015, Konietzko started working on a sci-fi graphic novel series called Threadworlds. This series is planned to be published by First Second Books.
In September 2018, Netflix announced that Konietzko and DiMartino would be executive producers for a live-action series based on Avatar: The Last Airbender. This show was released in 2024. However, on August 12, 2020, Konietzko and DiMartino announced they had left the project. They explained that they had different ideas from the Netflix team.
In February 2021, ViacomCBS announced the creation of Avatar Studios. This new part of Nickelodeon focuses on making new animated series and movies. These new stories are all set in the same world as Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Both DiMartino and Konietzko lead this studio as co-chief creative officers. The first movie from this studio is expected to be released on January 20, 2026.
Bryan Konietzko's Personal Life
Bryan Konietzko grew up in Roswell, Georgia, which is a suburb north of Atlanta. He graduated from Roswell High School. In 1998, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. Today, he lives in Los Angeles, California with his wife, Lisa.
Besides his animation work, Konietzko enjoys photography. He also has a band called Ginormous. They have released several albums, including Our Ancestors' Intense Love Affair and At Night, Under Artificial Light.
