The World of Avatar

In the world of Avatar, there are four main nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. Some people in these nations are called "benders" because they can control one of the four elements: water, earth, fire, or air.

Only one person, the Avatar, can master all four elements. The Avatar is like a bridge between the physical world and the spirit world. Their job is to bring balance and peace to the land. For 100 years, the Avatar was missing. During this time, the Fire Nation started a big war. They attacked the Air Nomads, almost wiping them out, and took over many parts of the Earth Kingdom.

How Characters Were Created

The creators of the show, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, came up with the characters by drawing ideas. Bryan first sketched a monk with an arrow on his head and a flying bison. Michael was interested in the South Pole. They combined these ideas to create the "air guy" (Aang) and "water guys" (Katara and Sokka) stuck in a snowy place, with "fire guys" (the Fire Nation) attacking them.

The different bending styles you see in the show are based on real-life martial arts. For example, Waterbending uses movements like tai chi, Earthbending uses Hung Ga, Firebending uses Northern Shaolin, and Airbending uses baguazhang. These fighting styles also match the personalities of the characters and their nations.

The cultures of the four nations are inspired by different parts of East Asia and indigenous cultures. The Water Tribes are like Inuit people. The Fire Nation is inspired by Imperial China and Imperial Japan. The Air Nomads are based on Tibetan Buddhist monks and Tibetan culture. The Earth Kingdom is mostly like Imperial China, with some Korean influences.

Character Personalities

Many characters have personalities that match their element. For example, Aang, an Airbender, is free-spirited and childlike, like the wind. He is also a pacifist, meaning he doesn't like violence, and he's a vegetarian. He is very connected to the spirit world.

Toph, an Earthbender, is very strong and direct, like the earth itself. Even though she is blind, she can "see" by feeling vibrations in the ground. This makes her very aware of everything around her.

Avatar Aang

Avatar Aang is the main hero of the original series. He is the current Avatar, a special person who keeps the world in balance. Aang is usually fun-loving and carefree. He is a pacifist and a vegetarian, which are important parts of his Air Nomad culture.

Aang was frozen in an iceberg for 100 years. When he was found, he had to learn to master Waterbending, Earthbending, and Firebending. He already knew Airbending. Throughout the series, Aang helps the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom fight against the Fire Nation. He learns a special technique called "energybending" to take away Fire Lord Ozai's bending power without harming him.

In the sequel series, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, we learn that Aang and his friends created the United Republic of Nations. He married Katara and had three children. His youngest son, Tenzin, helped bring back the Air Nomads. Aang sometimes appears to the next Avatar, Korra, as a spirit guide.

Appa

Appa is Aang's loyal sky bison. He is Aang's best friend and helps the group travel around the world by flying. Appa can also create strong gusts of air with his tail. Aang says that flying bisons were the first Airbenders. The creators designed Appa to look like a mix between a bison and a manatee.

Momo

Momo is the only known Winged Lemur in the show. He was found by Aang at the Southern Air Temple and became his pet. Momo is often a source of funny moments and helps the heroes in dangerous situations. The creators said Momo was meant to represent the spirit of Monk Gyatso, Aang's old teacher. Momo is a mix between a Bat and a Lemur. His name means "peach" in Japanese.

Katara

Katara is a 14-year-old Waterbending master from the Southern Water Tribe. She is Sokka’s younger sister and later marries Avatar Aang. Katara is very caring and determined to fight against injustice. She starts as an inexperienced Waterbender but quickly becomes a master.

Katara also learns that she can heal people with her Waterbending. Her skills include controlling water temperature, making ice weapons, and even pulling water from the air and plants. She also learns a rare and powerful technique called Bloodbending. In Avatar: The Legend of Korra, Katara becomes Avatar Korra's Waterbending teacher.

Sokka

Sokka is a 15-year-old warrior from the Southern Water Tribe and Katara's older brother. He doesn't have bending powers, so he uses weapons like a boomerang and a sword made from a meteorite. Sokka is very smart and good at understanding technology, even helping to improve the design of the hot air balloon. He is also very funny and resourceful.

Sokka was in love with Princess Yue from the Northern Water Tribe. Later, he started dating Suki, the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors. In the sequel series, we learn that Sokka was an important leader in the United Republic of Nations.

Toph Beifong

Toph Beifong is a blind Earthbending master from a rich family in the Earth Kingdom. She helps Aang learn Earthbending. Toph is sarcastic, direct, and tough. Even though she can't see with her eyes, she can "see" by feeling vibrations in the earth. She learned this special "seismic sense" from blind Badger Moles. This gives her a big advantage in fights.

Toph also taught herself how to metalbend by controlling the small bits of earth inside metal. In the sequel series, Toph became the first Chief of the Metalbending Police Force in Republic City. She had two daughters, Lin and Suyin. Toph later lived in the Foggy Swamp and helped Korra.

Zuko

Zuko is the banished prince of the Fire Nation. He believes that capturing the Avatar will bring back his honor. Zuko is also skilled with two swords, using them when he disguises himself as the "Blue Spirit."

Zuko's family history is complicated. His great-grandfather, Fire Lord Sozin, started the war, but his other great-grandfather, Avatar Roku, tried to stop it.

In the beginning, Zuko tries many times to capture Aang. But he also helps Aang sometimes, like when he rescues him from a fortress. Later, Zuko and his Uncle Iroh are forced to leave the Fire Nation. Zuko eventually decides to join Aang and his friends. He learns the secret of Firebending from two dragons and becomes Aang's Firebending teacher. Zuko helps his friends in many ways, including rescuing prisoners and helping Katara find her mother's killer. After defeating his sister Azula, Zuko becomes the new Fire Lord and ends the war.

The sequel series shows that Fire Lord Zuko helped Avatar Aang create the United Republic of Nations. He later gave up his throne to his daughter, Izumi, and traveled the world as an ambassador for peace.

Suki

Suki is the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, an all-female group of fighters. They are named after the powerful Avatar Kyoshi. Suki is a very skilled fighter. She first met Team Avatar on Kyoshi Island and taught Sokka how to fight. They later started dating.

Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors were captured by Azula but were later freed by Sokka and Zuko. Suki then joined Aang's group and helped them fight the Fire Nation. After the war, she became a bodyguard for Fire Lord Zuko.

Uncle Iroh

Uncle Iroh is a wise Firebending master and Zuko's uncle. He was once a great general and heir to the Fire Nation throne. But after his son died, his younger brother Ozai became Fire Lord instead.

Iroh is different from most Firebenders. He is kind and friendly, and he generates his fire from understanding life energy, not anger. He learned this from the dragons, who were the original Firebenders, and he kept their existence a secret. Iroh is also a member of the Order of the White Lotus, a secret group of wise people. He loves good tea, the game Pai Sho, and cheerful company.

In the sequel series, Iroh's spirit goes to the Spirit World. He helps Avatar Korra and Aang's children there.

Azula

Azula is Zuko's younger sister and a very talented Firebending master. She can even create blue fire and lightning. Azula is often cruel and doesn't hesitate to do what she wants. This calm mindset helps her create lightning.

Azula becomes very upset when her friends Mai and Ty Lee leave her. She also struggles when her father leaves her in charge of the Fire Nation. She becomes increasingly unstable and is eventually defeated by Zuko and Katara. After the war, Azula is placed in a mental institution. In the comic books, she tries to find her mother, but her madness causes more trouble.

Pabu is a playful male fire ferret that Bolin rescued from a pet store. Pabu is a mix of a red panda and a black-footed ferret. He often provides comic relief and helps Mako and Bolin.

Lin's design was inspired by a friend of the creators and actress Marlene Dietrich.
