Greg Baldwin's Voice Acting Career
Greg Baldwin has worked a lot in theater. He played characters like Sidney Lipton in God's Favorite and Mushnik in Little Shop of Horrors. He also appeared in plays like Fools and Bullshot Crummond.
Taking Over Big Roles
Many people thought Greg Baldwin was Mako Iwamatsu's student, ready to take over the voice of Iroh in Avatar: The Last Airbender. But actually, Greg got the part by auditioning, just like any other actor.
He first started voicing Iroh in the show's second season. This was for short lines of dialogue that Mako Iwamatsu couldn't record before he passed away. Greg's voice was mixed with Mako's recordings. Greg then became the full-time voice for Iroh in the final season of Avatar: The Last Airbender. He also voiced Iroh in many video games based on the show. Later, he continued as Iroh in the second and third seasons of The Legend of Korra.
Before the last season of The Last Airbender aired, Greg also voiced Splinter in the movie TMNT. Mako had passed away during the movie's production. Greg's recordings were blended with Mako's because their voices sounded very similar.
About six months after The Last Airbender finished, Greg again took over a role from Mako. He voiced Aku in the 2009 video game Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall. Years later, after Iroh's last appearance in The Legend of Korra, Greg voiced Aku again for the fifth season of Samurai Jack. In 2020, he played Aku once more in the Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time video game.
When the fifth season of Samurai Jack was released, the show's creator, Genndy Tartakovsky, talked about Greg's casting. He said it was hard to replace Mako, who was very special. But Greg did a great job. Mako's daughter and grandson even visited the studio and cried when they heard Greg's voice, as it reminded them of their father and grandfather.
Other Cool Characters
Besides taking over roles from Mako, Greg Baldwin has also voiced many original characters. He has worked on Samurai Jack and the Avatar shows. He also voiced characters in other TV shows and video games.
He provided voices for multiple characters in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures. He also made guest appearances in Xiaolin Showdown, SpongeBob SquarePants, Curious George, and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack.
Greg Baldwin was first chosen to voice Atlas in BioShock. However, another actor, Karl Hanover, later replaced him. The character's original Southern accent was also changed to an Irish accent. Greg's voice can be heard in many other video games. These include Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, F.E.A.R., and Fallout 4.
In April 2021, Greg announced he was cast in a new role for the Disney Television Animation show, The Ghost and Molly McGee. When the show came out, his role was revealed to be one of the Ghost Council members. In the second season, his character's name was shown to be Bartholomew. Greg also provided other voices for the series.
In a rare live-action role, he appeared as a writer named Dutch Zweistrong in the movie Hail, Caesar!.
Greg Baldwin's Life Outside Acting
Greg Baldwin lives in Albuquerque with his wife, Melissa Baldwin. They have two children named Sydney and Cooper.
Greg shared in an interview how he managed to sound like Mako for his voice roles. He listened to the cast album of Pacific Overtures, a musical Mako starred in. This album was one of Greg's favorites.
In May 2023, Greg asked on his Twitter account if he should run for Governor of New Mexico in 2026. In November 2024, Greg again said he was interested in running for governor. He mentioned running as part of the White Lotus Party. This party is named after the secret group in Avatar: The Last Airbender that his character, Iroh, belongs to.
Before these announcements, Greg often used his social media to support different political causes. He had shown support for Deb Haaland to be governor of New Mexico. He also mentioned he wouldn't mind running for mayor of the state instead.
