List of The Legend of Korra episodes

Book Two: Spirits is the second season of the animated TV show The Legend of Korra. It has fourteen episodes, also called "chapters." This season focuses more on spirits and spiritual ideas than the first season, Book One: Air. Book Two: Spirits started showing on Nickelodeon in the U.S. on September 13, 2013.

What the Story is About

In the world of The Legend of Korra, some people can control one of the four elements: water, earth, fire, or air. This power is called "bending." The Avatar is a special person who can bend all four elements. Their job is to keep the world balanced and peaceful.

This season is about Avatar Korra learning to understand her role. She is the link between humans and the magical "Spirit World."

Book Two takes place six months after Book One. The story happens in different places. Some parts are in Republic City, where the first season was set. Other parts are in the Spirit World and the South Pole, which is home to the Southern Water Tribe.

Korra's uncle, Unalaq, is the chief of the Northern Water Tribe. He takes control of the Southern Water Tribe. His secret plan is to free Vaatu, an ancient dark spirit. The story follows Korra's friends as they try to get help for the Southern Tribe in Republic City. It also follows Korra as she tries to stop Unalaq's plans and learn more about spirits.

Two special episodes, called "Beginnings," tell the story of the very first Avatar. This was a young man named Wan. He became the first Avatar by trying to keep peace between the human world and the spirit world. He also tried to fix a mistake he made when he accidentally helped the dark spirit Vaatu.

New characters you meet in this season include:

  • Unalaq and his children, Desna and Eska.
  • Kya and Bumi, who are the siblings of Korra's teacher, Tenzin.
  • Varrick, a rich and quirky inventor and businessman from the Southern Water Tribe.

Story of Book Two

The season begins six months after the first one. Korra and her friends visit the Southern Water Tribe. There, Korra's uncle, Unalaq, shows her a new way to deal with spirits. He helps her open a "spirit portal" at the South Pole. This portal connects the human world and the Spirit World.

Unalaq then takes control of the Southern Water Tribe. He arrests Korra's father, Tonraq, and her mother, Senna, saying they planned to hurt him. Korra learns that Unalaq set up her father. She helps her father and other rebels escape. Korra tries to get help from the President of Republic City, Raiko, but he refuses to send troops.

Meanwhile, in Republic City, strange things happen. A Southern Water Tribe building is bombed. Mako, who is now a police officer, investigates. He finds out that Varrick, the eccentric businessman, is behind the bombings and thefts. Varrick was trying to make the Southern Water Tribe look bad and start a war. Mako arrests Varrick.

Korra travels to the Fire Nation to seek help. On her journey, she is attacked by a dark spirit and loses her memory. She is found by Fire Sages, who help her. While recovering, Korra sees visions of the past. She learns the story of Wan, the very first Avatar.

Wan lived 10,000 years ago. He accidentally freed Vaatu, the spirit of darkness and chaos. To fix his mistake, Wan teamed up with Raava, the spirit of light and peace. They fought Vaatu during an event called Harmonic Convergence. Wan and Raava fused together, becoming the first Avatar. Wan then sealed Vaatu away and closed the spirit portals.

Korra regains her memory and realizes Unalaq plans to free Vaatu during the next Harmonic Convergence. This event is only weeks away. Korra enters the Spirit World with Jinora, Tenzin's daughter, who has a strong connection to spirits. Unalaq forces Korra to open the northern spirit portal. Jinora gets lost in the Spirit World.

Korra and her friends attack Unalaq at the South Pole. Unalaq merges with Vaatu, becoming a powerful Dark Avatar. He fights Korra and tears Raava out of her, breaking Korra's connection to all past Avatars. Unalaq, now "Unavaatu," becomes a giant dark spirit and attacks Republic City.

Korra, guided by Tenzin, meditates at the Tree of Time. She finds a small piece of Raava still inside Vaatu. With Jinora's help, Korra pulls Raava out and purifies Unalaq, defeating Vaatu and killing Unalaq. Korra and Raava merge again, but Korra's link to her past Avatars is still gone.

Korra decides to leave the spirit portals open. She believes humans and spirits can live together. She also declares the Southern Water Tribe independent. Korra and Mako decide to be friends instead of dating. Korra announces that the world has entered a new age.
