Book One: Air is the first exciting season of the animated TV show The Legend of Korra. It was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. This season has twelve episodes, which are called "chapters." It was first planned to be a short series, but it became so popular that it was expanded to four seasons and fifty-two episodes! Book One: Air first aired in the U.S. from April 14 to June 23, 2012, on the Nickelodeon channel.
This season follows a brave seventeen-year-old girl named Korra from the Southern Water Tribe. She is the next Avatar, following Aang from the earlier series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Korra travels to a big city called Republic City to learn how to airbend. There, she faces a group called the "Equalists," who are against people who can bend elements. Their leader is a mysterious masked person named Amon.

Watching Book One: Air
Before the show officially started on TV, the first two episodes were released online early. This happened because fans helped "Korra Nation," an online community for the show, reach a goal of 100,000 likes and shares. The episodes were available for a whole weekend starting March 24, 2012.
Book One: Air was shown on Nickelodeon and Nickelodeon HD from April 14 to June 23, 2012. In the U.S., you could watch the episodes for free on Nickelodeon's website or buy them digitally. Later, Nicktoons re-aired Book One with special comments from the creators. This special airing was called Korra: Making of a Legend and ran from July 9 to July 20, 2012.
The series also premiered in Canada on YTV on June 9, 2012, and on Nickelodeon Canada later that year. Fans in the UK and Ireland could watch it on Nickelodeon UK and Ireland starting July 7, 2013.
What Happens in Book One: Air?
The story begins by showing Korra as the Avatar. She has already mastered water, earth, and firebending, but she still needs to learn airbending. To do this, Korra travels to Republic City to train with Tenzin, who is Avatar Aang's youngest son.
Korra's Adventures in Republic City
In the big city, Korra quickly gets into trouble with Lin Beifong, the chief of police. Lin is the daughter of Toph Beifong from the original series. Korra helps stop some local troublemakers, but she does it in her own way, which clashes with the police.
A council member named Tarrlok, who is very ambitious, asks Korra to join him against the "Equalists." This group, led by the masked Amon, wants to stop all bending. As Korra explores Republic City, she meets two brothers, Mako and Bolin. They are part of a pro-bending team called the "Fire Ferrets." Korra joins their team, and they get a sponsor, Asami Sato, who is the daughter of a rich inventor. These four friends then form a new "Team Avatar."
The Equalists' Rise
After Korra arrives, the Equalists become more and more active. Their actions lead to a big attack on the pro-bending arena. Tarrlok starts to treat non-benders unfairly, and Korra refuses to support his harsh methods. In a fight, Tarrlok uses a forbidden type of waterbending called bloodbending to overpower Korra and kidnap her. He tries to make it look like the Equalists did it.
Amon then arrives at Tarrlok's secret hideout and takes away Tarrlok's bending powers. Korra manages to escape, only to find that Republic City is being taken over by the Equalists.
The Final Battle and Korra's Discovery
In the last two episodes, naval forces led by Iroh (the grandson of Zuko from the original series) try to help, but they are defeated by Equalist sea mines and flying machines. While trying to find Amon, Korra learns a big secret: Tarrlok and Amon are brothers, and they are the sons of Yakone, a powerful person Avatar Aang defeated many years ago.
Amon takes away Korra's bending abilities. But in a moment of great stress, Korra discovers her own hidden airbending powers! She uses them against Amon and reveals to everyone that he is actually a waterbender, not a non-bender as he claimed. This causes all his followers to leave him. Amon tries to escape with Tarrlok, but Tarrlok makes their boat explode at sea.
Feeling sad and defeated, Korra connects with Avatar Aang's spirit. Aang restores her bending powers, allowing her to help others who had their bending taken away by Amon. Everyone is amazed, and Tenzin proudly calls her Avatar Korra.

The music for The Legend of Korra was created by "The Track Team," which is made up of composers Jeremy Zuckerman and Benjamin Wynn. They both worked on the music for Avatar: The Last Airbender. For The Legend of Korra, Zuckerman composed the music, and Wynn handled the sound design.
The creators, Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino, wanted the music to mix traditional Chinese music with early jazz. So, Zuckerman and Wynn created a score that combined parts of Dixieland jazz, traditional Chinese music, and Western orchestra sounds. It was mostly played by a group of string instruments and various Chinese solo instruments.
A soundtrack CD, The Legend of Korra: Original Music from Book One, came out on July 16, 2013. It has 26 instrumental songs. Konietzko mentioned that getting the album released was a "frustrating wait and battle" due to some official delays. He hoped the album would sell well to convince Nickelodeon to release an Avatar: The Last Airbender soundtrack, which many fans had asked for. The day after it was released, the album was the best-selling soundtrack and ranked number 5 in pop music sales on Amazon.com.
