Katara is a main character in the animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. She was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Mae Whitman voices her in the first series, and Eva Marie Saint voices her when she is older in the second series.

Katara is a powerful waterbender, meaning she can control water and ice with her mind. At the start of the story, she is the only waterbender in her home, the Southern Water Tribe. She and her older brother, Sokka, find Aang, the last Airbender and the long-lost Avatar, frozen in an iceberg. They join him on his mission to stop the Fire Nation and bring peace to the world. Katara later becomes a Master Waterbender.

About Katara

Her Personality

Katara is known for being smart, helpful, and caring. She is often like a mother figure to her friends. This is because her tribe faced many challenges, and she had to grow up quickly.

Katara is usually kind and giving. However, she can also be stubborn and gets upset if people doubt her or betray her. She sometimes holds onto anger for a long time.

Katara's Story

In Avatar: The Last Airbender

When Katara was eight, her mother, Kya, gave her life to protect Katara from a Fire Nation attack. Katara was the only waterbender in the Southern Tribe. Even though she wanted to practice waterbending, she took on cooking and cleaning duties. Her brother, Sokka, trained to be a warrior. Later, her father Hakoda and other warriors left to fight the Fire Nation. Katara, Sokka, and their grandmother Kanna stayed to look after the tribe.

Six years later, Katara and Sokka found Aang, the Avatar, frozen in ice. To help Aang and improve her own waterbending, Katara joined him on his journey. They traveled to the Northern Water Tribe to find a waterbending master. There, Master Pakku first refused to teach her because of old rules. But when he saw Katara's necklace, which he had given to her grandmother, he agreed. Katara quickly became skilled, and Pakku allowed her to teach Aang.

Katara then went with Aang to the Earth Kingdom so he could learn earthbending. Later, the earthbender Toph Bei Fong joined their group. Katara and Toph argued at first but soon became good friends. In the Earth Kingdom's capital, Katara met Prince Zuko and his sister Azula. During a battle, Azula hurt Aang with lightning. Katara took him to safety and used her healing skills to help him recover.

In a village suffering from pollution, Katara pretended to be the river spirit 'Painted Lady' to help the people. She later met Hama, an old waterbender from her own tribe who had been captured by the Fire Nation. Hama offered to teach Katara a dark waterbending technique called "Bloodbending." This skill allows a bender to control the water inside a person's body, making them move against their will. Katara refused to learn it, but Hama used it on Aang and Sokka. Katara was forced to use bloodbending herself to stop Hama.

Prince Zuko later joined Aang's group. Katara didn't trust him at first. But he helped her find the man who killed her mother. During this search, Katara used bloodbending again. She decided not to get revenge but accepted Zuko as a friend.

In the final battle, Katara helped Zuko stop Azula from becoming Fire Lord. She defeated Azula and healed Zuko. When the war ended, Katara and Aang shared a kiss, starting their romantic relationship.

In The Legend of Korra

In the sequel series, The Legend of Korra, Katara is 85 years old. She is one of the few original Team Avatar members still alive, along with Zuko and Toph. She is a respected member of the White Lotus group. Katara became the waterbending teacher for Korra, the new Avatar.

Katara and Aang had three children: Bumi (who couldn't bend at first but later learned airbending), Kya (a waterbender), and Tenzin (an airbender). In the first season of The Legend of Korra, Katara gives Korra her blessing to go to Republic City for training. She also tries to heal Korra after she loses her bending abilities, but is not successful.

In the second season, Katara celebrates with her children. She encourages Tenzin to take his siblings to the Southern Air Temple. Later, she uses her healing skills to help injured soldiers. She also keeps her granddaughter Jinora's body alive while Jinora's spirit is in the spirit world.

In the fourth season, Katara helps Korra heal after being poisoned. Her healing abilities allow Korra to walk again after being in a wheelchair for many months.

Katara's Abilities

Katara's waterbending skills grew a lot during the series. At first, she struggled to control her bending. But with hard work, a special scroll, and lessons from a master, she became a "Waterbending Yang-style Master." She was chosen by Korra to teach her waterbending and healing arts.

Waterbending

Katara is very skilled in waterbending. This bending style uses movements similar to T'ai chi ch'uan. Waterbending is about change and adapting. It focuses on "softness and breathing" rather than strong attacks. Waterbenders use the environment and their opponents' movements against them.

"Solid, liquid, gas – Water is the element of change. Water is patient and waits. Wears down the cliff tops, the mountains. There is nothing softer and weaker than water, and yet there is nothing better for attacking hard and strong things."

—General Iroh (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

Katara is a strong fighter. She can cut through objects with water, create powerful waves and whips, and cover herself with water for defense. She can surf on ice, run on water, and control existing ice. She can also form ice into shapes, freeze water, and create mist or steam. She can even turn steam into ice or make large amounts of water disappear. Katara can control huge amounts of water, creating giant waves and bubbles. Her powers become even stronger under a full moon.

Katara can also bend other water-based liquids. For example, she has bent ink onto a map, used waterbending to cook soup, and even bent perfume. She can create thick fog and manipulate mud by controlling the water in it, working with Toph who controls the dirt. She can even bend her own sweat!

Healing Abilities

Katara is one of the few waterbenders who can heal injuries. She first showed this skill when Aang accidentally burned her. She improved this ability by learning from Yagoda, a healer in the Northern Water Tribe. She uses healing to help with sickness, brainwashing, and wounds like burns. However, she cannot cure all illnesses or severe brain damage. With special water from the Northern Water Tribe's Spirit Shrine, she even healed Aang after Azula fatally injured him. By the time of The Legend of Korra, she is known as the best healer in the world.

Bloodbending

Katara also knows a waterbending technique called "bloodbending." This skill allows her to control the water inside a living creature's body. This makes the target unable to move or fight back. She can only use bloodbending during a full moon, when her waterbending is at its strongest. Katara was forced to learn this technique from Hama, who invented it. Katara dislikes bloodbending and has only used it twice when she was under great stress. In her later years, she worked to make bloodbending illegal.
