Followed by Xiaolin Chronicles

Xiaolin Showdown is an American cartoon TV show. It was created by Christy Hui and shown on Kids' WB. The story takes place in a world where martial arts and magic are common. The show is about four young Xiaolin warriors who are still learning. They fight against the evil Heylin forces. Their main goal is to protect special items called Shen Gong Wu. These are ancient magical objects with great power. Villains want to use them to take over the world.

In most episodes, a new Shen Gong Wu appears. Both the good and evil sides then race to find it. The episode usually ends with a magical duel called a Xiaolin Showdown. One good character and one evil character battle for the Shen Gong Wu.

The show first aired on Kids' WB from 2003 to 2006. It had 3 seasons and 52 episodes. Later, reruns were shown on Cartoon Network and Boomerang.

A new series, Xiaolin Chronicles, came out in 2013. It was shown on Disney XD and later on Netflix. This series had one season and 26 episodes.

Plot

Season One

Four young monks, Omi, Kimiko, Raimundo, and Clay, meet at the Xiaolin Temple. They learn they are chosen to become Xiaolin Dragons. They become friends and work together. They travel the world looking for Shen Gong Wu. These are mystical objects with powers that keep good and evil balanced.

Along the way, they fight a young evil genius named Jack Spicer. They also battle the evil Heylin witch Wuya. Jack accidentally set Wuya free from a puzzle box where she had been trapped for 1500 years. Jack steals enough Shen Gong Wu to create a monster called Mala Mala Jong. Wuya uses this monster to try and take over the world. Raimundo disobeys orders and fights the monster. The other monks then have to fight to protect the remaining Shen Gong Wu at the Temple. All the monks, except Raimundo, are promoted to Xiaolin Apprentices. Raimundo gets angry and joins the Heylin side. He helps Wuya get her human body back.

Season Two

Omi travels back in time. He gets a second puzzle box from Grand Master Dashi. Dashi was the one who trapped Wuya 1500 years ago. Omi has no way to get back to his own time. So, he freezes himself using the Orb of Tornami. In the present day, Omi breaks free from the ice with the puzzle box. Raimundo decides he belongs with his friends at the Xiaolin Temple. He traps Wuya in the new puzzle box. After returning, the monks keep looking for Shen Gong Wu. Raimundo is eventually promoted to Xiaolin Apprentice.

Later, the monks meet a new villain, Chase Young. He was once a Xiaolin monk but turned evil. Chase becomes interested in Omi. He tries to trick Omi into joining the Heylin side. Master Fung gets trapped in the Ying-Yang World. Omi asks Chase for help. Omi successfully rescues Master Fung. However, when Omi leaves the Ying-Yang world, his bad side takes over. He joins Chase Young. The other monks soon learn that Chase had planned everything. He knew Master Fung would get trapped. He also knew Omi would join him.

Season Three

Raimundo, Kimiko, and Clay go to the Ying-Yang World. They want to get Omi's good side back and bring him to the Xiaolin side. After getting Omi back, the monks are promoted to Wudai Warriors. They then meet Hannibal Bean. He is an evil demon from the Ying-Yang World. Hannibal Bean is the one who made Chase Young turn evil.

Near the end of their journey, Master Fung tells the monks they have one last mission. After this, the team's leader, the Shoku Warrior, will be revealed. Omi decides he will stop Hannibal Bean from turning Chase evil. He freezes himself to travel to the future. He wants to find the Sands of Time. He succeeds by switching the Lao Mang Long Soup with pea soup. But when he returns to his time, things are worse. Instead of Chase turning evil, Hannibal Bean turns Chase's old friend, Master Monk Guan, evil. The monks and Chase are captured by Hannibal Bean, Wuya, and the evil Guan. Chase sacrifices his good self to save the monks. This gives them a chance to fight and fix everything. The monks succeed, and the timeline is fixed.

In the end, Raimundo is revealed as the Shoku Warrior. The series finishes with all the villains attacking the temple. The Wudai Warriors, led by Raimundo, fight back.

Characters

Xiaolin Showdown has many characters. Some only appear in one episode. But the main characters are well-developed. They have strengths and small weaknesses that show up as the story goes on.

Main Characters

  • Omi (voiced by Tara Strong) – He is the Xiaolin Dragon of Water. Omi is the main hero of the show. He was the first student to train with Master Fung. Sometimes Omi can be selfish and boastful. He often learns lessons about being humble. He grew up in the monastery, so he doesn't know much about the outside world. Omi often mixes up common sayings. His special moves are Tsunami Strike-Water and Wudai-Neptune Water. His Wudai Weapon is the Shimo Staff. His favorite Shen Gong Wu is the Orb of Tornami. He turned evil for a short time when he joined Chase Young.
  • Raimundo Pedrosa (voiced by Tom Kenny) – He is the Xiaolin Dragon of Wind. Raimundo is stubborn but will do anything to protect his friends. He is street-smart and calls himself the group's rebel. He comes from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He joined the Heylin side twice. Once, he was jealous of his friends' success. The second time was a trick to get Shen Gong Wu from Hannibal Roy Bean. His special moves are Typhoon Boom-Wind and Wudai-Star Wind. His favorite Shen Gong Wu is the Sword of the Storm. His Wudai Weapon is the Blade of the Nebula. He is named the Shoku Warrior in the last episode.
  • Kimiko Tohomiko (voiced by Grey DeLisle) – She is the Xiaolin Dragon of Fire. Kimiko is the only girl on the team. She is the most skilled with technology and comes from Japan. Kimiko often changes her hairstyle and outfits. Her special moves are Judolette Flip-Fire and Wudai-Mars Fire. Her favorite Shen Gong Wu is the Star Hanabi. Her Wudai Weapon is the Arrow Sparrow. She gets angry easily. But she can also be very focused.
  • Clay Bailey (voiced by Jeff Bennett) – He is the Xiaolin Dragon of Earth. Clay is the strong one of the team and a Texas cowboy. Clay often uses "cowboy slang." He is a gentleman and never fights girls. He also gets very nervous on stage. He is big and calm, but also kind and gentle. He only gets really mad if someone takes or ruins his cowboy hat. Clay has a sister named Jessie who leads a group of outlaws. Clay's special moves are Seismic Kick-Earth and Wudai-Crater Earth. His favorite Shen Gong Wu are the Fist of Tebigong and the Third-Arm Sash. His Wudai Weapon is the Big Bang Meteorang.
  • Dojo Kanojo Cho (voiced by Wayne Knight) – He is a shapeshifting Chinese dragon. Dojo is the Xiaolin warriors' main way of traveling and their funny advisor. He can sense Shen Gong Wu. He is usually about 1.5 feet long. But he can grow into a 40-foot dragon when needed. He has served Grand Master Dashi. Dojo is often seen with Clay, or with Omi, Raimundo, Kimiko, and Master Fung. When Dojo can't help, the warriors use other Shen Gong Wu for travel, like the Silver Manta Ray.
  • Jack Spicer (voiced by Danny Cooksey) – He is the Xiaolin Warriors' first enemy. Jack Spicer is known for building robots. He often gives long speeches and calls himself an "evil boy genius." He is the one who freed Wuya from her puzzle box. He helps her find Shen Gong Wu to take over the world. Jack has helped the Xiaolin Warriors sometimes. He even shows signs of being good. But he always goes back to the evil side. His favorite Shen Gong Wu is the Monkey Staff.
  • Wuya (voiced by Susan Silo) – She is a 1500-year-old Heylin witch. She is the main villain against the Xiaolin. Wuya's body was destroyed after Grand Master Dashi trapped her in a puzzle box. Her goal is to use the Shen Gong Wu to get her body and magic back. This happens with Raimundo's help in season one and Chase Young's help in seasons two and three. Like Dojo, she can sense when a Shen Gong Wu appears. She doesn't need the Scroll of the Shen Gong Wu to know what it does.
  • Chase Young (voiced by Jason Marsden) – He is a villain who appears in the second season. He is an even bigger threat than Jack. He became evil when Hannibal Bean tricked him into drinking a special soup. This soup made him stay young forever. Chase Young has an army of warriors who are trapped as jungle cats. He can also change into a lizard-like creature. Chase rarely uses Shen Gong Wu in battle. He says they distract him from his martial arts skills. In season two, Chase tries to make Omi join the Heylin side. He succeeds, but later lets Omi go out of respect.

Supporting Characters

  • Master Fung (voiced by René Auberjonois in season 1 and Maurice LaMarche in seasons 2-3) – He is the Xiaolin Warrior's Master, trainer, and guide. Master Fung is almost always calm, even when the Warriors make mistakes.
  • Master Monk Guan (voiced by Jeff Bennett) – He is a famous Tai chi master. He has traveled the world many times. He has defeated many enemies using only his famous Spear of Guan. He later gives a copy of his favorite Spear of Guan to Raimundo. He helps the young monks with their combat training. He has his own temple where the monks stay and keep Shen Gong Wu while he trains them.
  • Grandmaster Dashi (voiced by Tom Kenny) – He is the grandmaster Xiaolin monk. He trapped Wuya in a puzzle box 1500 years ago. He appeared with Dojo when Omi traveled to the past. He was friends with Master Monk Guan and Chase Young.
  • Hannibal Roy Bean (voiced by Tom Kenny) – Hannibal is a small, bean-shaped demon. He spends his time planning evil and world domination. He was first shown trapped by Chase Young. But he tricks the Xiaolin warriors into freeing him. His main Shen Gong Wu is the Moby Morpher. He uses it to change his shape and size. He travels on his bird, Ying-Ying.

Mystical Elements

Shen Gong Wu

The main goal of the show is to collect the Shen Gong Wu. These are mystical items with magical powers. You activate them by saying their name out loud. When Wuya was freed, the Shen Gong Wu started to appear. They are mostly used in Xiaolin Showdowns.

The first Xiaolin Showdown was between Grand Master Dashi and Wuya. It was a huge battle. Dashi used the Shen Gong Wu against Wuya's magic. Dashi won, and Wuya was trapped in a puzzle box. To make sure Wuya could never get the Shen Gong Wu, Dashi and Dojo hid them all over the world. Dashi then created the Xiaolin Temple. He started a line of Xiaolin Warriors to keep the Shen Gong Wu safe. If Wuya ever got free, the Xiaolin Warriors would fight her.

A Shen Gong Wu only appears when it chooses to. When it does, both Wuya and Dojo can sense where it is. Wuya knows which Shen Gong Wu has appeared. The Xiaolin monks must look at the Ancient Scroll of the Shen Gong Wu to find out what it does. Chase Young can also tell when a new Shen Gong Wu is about to appear.

Sometimes, special events in space affect the Shen Gong Wu. When the planets line up, the Shen Gong Wu come together to form Mala Mala Jong. When a rare Heylin Comet flies over Earth, the Shen Gong Wu come alive. They can take over the person using them. Raimundo was taken over by many Shen Gong Wu during the Heylin Comet. He turned into a giant monster until the comet passed.

In Xiaolin Chronicles, many Shen Gong Wu were changed and renamed.

Xiaolin Showdowns

In Xiaolin Showdown, if more than one person grabs a Shen Gong Wu at the same time, a Xiaolin Showdown begins. In this competition, each side bets a Shen Gong Wu they already own. Sometimes, they bet more than one Shen Gong Wu. The winner gets all the Shen Gong Wu that were bet.

If more than two people touch a Shen Gong Wu at once, a different kind of Showdown happens. A Showdown Trio is a two-on-one or three-person fight. A Xiaolin Showdown Tsunami is a two-on-two or four-person fight. An Eight-Way Xiaolin Showdown is a four-on-four battle. You can also call for a Cosmic Clash Showdown. This lets you bring more people into the fight who didn't touch the Shen Gong Wu. Usually, people use the Shen Gong Wu they bet in the Showdown.

The challenge in a Xiaolin Showdown can be anything. Most often, it's a race to the Shen Gong Wu. When the Showdown is called, the world around the fighters changes. The ground they are on becomes extreme. For example, a mountain might become a field of rock pillars. Or a snowfield might become a big snowboarding course. Some Showdowns also affect the people fighting. For example, they might gain weight for a sumo wrestling fight. Other challenges have been games of tag, basketball, or regular combat. The challenge officially starts when everyone yells "Gong Yi Tanpai!" When someone wins, the world goes back to normal. The winner gets all the Shen Gong Wu that were bet.

"Gong Yi Tanpai!" is a made-up Chinese phrase that means, "Ready, Set, Go!"

Omi accidentally gave the competition its name. This happened when he traveled back in time to ask Grand Master Dashi to make another puzzle box for Wuya.
