René Murat Auberjonois (June 1, 1940 – December 8, 2019) was a talented American actor and director. He was famous for playing many different characters on stage, in movies, and on TV. One of his most well-known roles was Odo on the science fiction TV show Star Trek: Deep Space Nine from 1993 to 1999.
René Auberjonois first became famous as a stage actor. He won a special award called the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 1970 for his role in the musical Coco. He was nominated for three more Tony Awards for other plays like The Good Doctor, Big River, and City of Angels. He also won a Drama Desk Award for Big River.
He acted in over 200 movies and TV shows. On television, he was a main character in popular series such as Clayton Endicott III on Benson (1979–1986) and Paul Lewiston on Boston Legal (2004–2008). In movies, he played Father Mulcahy in M*A*S*H (1970), Roy Bagley in King Kong (1976), and Chef Louis in The Little Mermaid (1989), where he sang the song "Les Poissons". He also voiced characters in many animated films and video games.

René Auberjonois was born on June 1, 1940, in New York City. His father, Fernand Auberjonois, was a writer and foreign reporter from Switzerland. His mother, Laure Louise Napoléone Eugénie Caroline Murat, had a famous family history, including being related to Joachim Murat, who was a marshal for Napoleon and King of Naples.
René's grandfather, also named René Auberjonois, was a famous Swiss painter. His family moved to Paris after World War II, then returned to the United States. They lived in an artists' community in New York. The family also lived in London for a time, where René finished high school and studied theater. He later went to Carnegie Mellon University and earned a degree in Fine Arts in 1962.

Theatre Performances
After college, René worked with several theater groups. He helped start important theater companies like the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. In 1968, he started acting on Broadway, which is the highest level of theater in the U.S. He quickly won a Tony Award in 1970 for his role in Coco, acting alongside the famous actress Katharine Hepburn.
He continued to be nominated for more Tony Awards for his roles in plays like The Good Doctor, Big River, and City of Angels. He also acted in other well-known Broadway shows such as Twelfth Night and Sly Fox. In 2018, René Auberjonois was honored by being added to the American Theater Hall of Fame.
Film Roles
René Auberjonois appeared in many movies. One of his first big film roles was Father Mulcahy in the original movie M*A*S*H in 1970. He also played the gangster Tony in Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach (1988) and Reverend Oliver in The Patriot (2000).
He had smaller, memorable roles in films like Batman Forever (1995) as Dr. Burton, and Brewster McCloud (1970) where he played a bird expert.
