Nana Visitor (born Nana Tucker on July 26, 1957) is an American actress. She is most famous for playing Kira Nerys in the TV show Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. She also played Jean Ritter in the TV series Wildfire.

Early Life and Family

Nana Tucker was born in New York City on July 26, 1957. Her mother, Nenette Charisse, was a ballet teacher. Her father, Robert Tucker, was a choreographer. Nana Visitor is also the niece of famous actress and dancer Cyd Charisse.

Starting Her Acting Career

Visitor began acting on Broadway in the 1970s. One of her early shows was My One and Only. Her first movie role was in the 1977 horror film The Sentinel.

On television, she appeared in the sitcom Ivan the Terrible in 1976. She also had roles in several soap operas like Ryan's Hope, The Doctors, and One Life to Live. In the early 1980s, she changed her stage name to "Nana Visitor."

Guest Roles in TV Shows

Throughout the 1980s, Nana Visitor appeared in many popular TV shows. In 1985, she was in two episodes of MacGyver. She also appeared in Remington Steele and Knight Rider.

In 1987, she played Ellen Dolan in a TV pilot for the comic book hero The Spirit. She also had roles in Night Court, In the Heat of the Night, and Matlock. In 1989, she was a guest star on Doogie Howser, M.D. and Thirtysomething.

Becoming a Star in Science Fiction

In 1990, Visitor co-starred with Sandra Bullock in the sitcom Working Girl.

From 1993 to 1999, Nana Visitor played Major (and later Colonel) Kira Nerys on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Her character was a former freedom fighter from the planet Bajor. She helped lead the space station after her planet was freed from the Cardassians. This role made her very well-known to science fiction fans.

Later Roles and Voice Work

After Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ended, Visitor had a role in the TV series Dark Angel. She also starred as Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago on Broadway.

From 2005 to 2008, she played Jean Ritter in the ABC Family series Wildfire. In 2008, she appeared in an episode of Battlestar Galactica. She also had a small part in the 2009 movie Friday the 13th.

Nana Visitor has also done voice work for the animated show Family Guy. In 2011, she was in the film The Resident and the TV series Torchwood: Miracle Day.

In 2024, she published a book called "Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman's Trek." This book looks at the female characters in the Star Trek universe and the actresses who played them.

Nana Visitor has been married three times and has two children. She was married to Nick Miscusi from 1989 to 1994. They have one son.

She later married her Star Trek: Deep Space Nine co-star Alexander Siddig in 1997. They had a son together. Her pregnancy was even written into the storyline of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine! She gave birth to her son Django in 1996. Visitor and Siddig divorced in 2001.

In 2003, she married Matthew Rimmer.

In 2001, two asteroids were named after Nana Visitor and her Star Trek: Deep Space Nine co-star Terry Farrell. These asteroids are called 26733 Nanavisitor and 26734 Terryfarrell.

Awards and Recognition

Nana Visitor has won several awards for her acting. For her role as Kira Nerys in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, she won the Sci-Fi Universe Magazine Reader's Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series in 1995. She also won the Online Film & Television Association Television Award for Best Actress in a Syndicated Series in 1997 and 1999.
