Boomerang is an American TV channel that shows animated cartoons. It is owned by The Cartoon Network, Inc., which is part of Warner Bros. Discovery. The channel mainly plays cartoons from the Warner Bros. Animation library. This includes classic shows from Warner Bros. Cartoons and Hanna-Barbera.
Boomerang first started in 1992 as a special block of shows on Cartoon Network. This block was all about classic cartoons. Later, in 2000, it became its own separate TV channel. By the late 2000s, Boomerang began showing more modern cartoons and reruns of Cartoon Network's own shows.
In 2015, Boomerang was relaunched. The goal was to make it a "second main channel" alongside Cartoon Network. It started making its own new shows, focusing on updated versions of popular cartoons like Looney Tunes and Scooby-Doo. In 2017, Boomerang also launched its own streaming service. This service ran until September 30, 2024.
As of November 2023, about 26 million homes in the United States could watch Boomerang. This number was lower than its peak of 47 million homes in 2019.

Boomerang's Beginnings
The Turner Broadcasting System had many old cartoons from MGM and early Warner Bros.. These cartoons were a big part of children's shows on other channels like TBS and TNT. When Cartoon Network started on October 1, 1992, these older shows needed a new home.
So, Boomerang was created. It began as a special block of shows on Cartoon Network on December 8, 1992. This block continued until October 3, 2004. As Cartoon Network started focusing more on new shows, Turner decided to launch Boomerang as its own cable channel. This happened on April 1, 2000.
A New Look for Boomerang
On February 4, 2014, Turner announced big plans for Boomerang. They wanted it to have commercials and grow all over the world. In October of that year, a new look for the channel was shown. This new look first appeared in Latin America in late September. It then came to the United States on January 19, 2015.
As part of these changes, Boomerang started making its own original shows for the first time. These new shows focused on well-known characters from the Warner Bros. cartoon collection. They were made to be fun for the whole family. Turner executives said these changes would help Boomerang become as important as Cartoon Network.
Boomerang's Streaming Service
On March 7, 2017, Boomerang announced a new streaming service. This service would have over 5000 cartoons from Hanna-Barbera and Warner Bros.. It would also have new shows made just for the service. The streaming service launched on April 11, 2017. It cost $4.99 per month or $39.99 per year. New episodes and content were added every week.
On November 13, 2018, Boomerang also launched a channel on the VRV streaming service. In August 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that the standalone Boomerang streaming service would close on September 30, 2024. Some of its shows moved to the Max streaming service.
What Shows on Boomerang?
Boomerang's TV channel currently shows a mix of classic cartoons and newer versions of shows from the Warner Bros. animation library. It also airs reruns and sometimes shows programs at the same time as Cartoon Network. Boomerang has also been used to air shows that Cartoon Network no longer wanted to broadcast.
After its 2015 relaunch, Boomerang produced its own original shows. These included Wabbit (later called New Looney Tunes), Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, and an animated show called Bunnicula.
Where Can You Watch Boomerang?
Boomerang channels and show blocks have launched all over the world. When the brand relaunched in 2015, these channels were meant for families to watch together. Starting in 2021, some of these channels changed to the preschool-focused Cartoonito brand.
