The Avayalik Islands are a group of islands found in the Atlantic Ocean. They are part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. This island group includes two main islands and at least seven smaller pieces of land.
Archaeologists first explored the Avayalik Islands in 1967. A team led by Patrick Plumet came here for the very first archaeological trip.
Ancient History of the Avayalik Islands
The Avayalik Islands were likely settled by people known as the Middle Dorset people. This happened between the 5th and 7th centuries AD. That means they lived there roughly from the 400s to the 600s.
Archaeological studies have uncovered several old structures on the islands. These include a winter house that was about 3 to 4 meters (10 to 13 feet) long on each side. It also had a long entrance tunnel, also about 3 to 4 meters long. These buildings were made during the same time period.
