History

The southbound platform before it was updated

This subway station first opened its doors on June 22, 1915. It was part of the new Sea Beach Line.

In 2005, the station was recognized as an important historical place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The station went through some big updates a few years ago. The platform for trains going towards Manhattan was closed first. This happened from January 18, 2016, to May 22, 2017. Then, the platform for trains going towards Coney Island was closed. That closure lasted from July 31, 2017, to October 29, 2018.

Station Layout

This station has four tracks, but only two are used regularly. These are the "local" tracks. The two tracks in the middle are "express" tracks. They are not usually used for trains stopping here. However, they can be used if trains need to be rerouted.

The station platforms are located in an open cut. This means they are below street level, but open to the sky. The walls and columns are painted a light brown color. Some columns have black signs with the station's name in white letters.

In 2018, new artwork was added to the station. It is called "Edges of a South Brooklyn Sky." This art includes 14 glass mosaics. They show scenes from the Gravesend community and celebrate the different people who live there.

Exits

The Avenue U station has two ways to enter and exit. Both are station buildings at street level. They are located between West Seventh and West Eighth Streets. Each building has stairs that lead down to the platforms.

The main exit is at the south end of the station. It leads to Avenue U. This exit has a ticket booth and machines where you can buy or add money to your MetroCard. The other exit is at the north end, leading to Avenue T. This exit does not have a staff member. It only has machines for entering and exit-only turnstiles.
