Avery (also known as Êwîheki in the Sac language) is a ghost town located in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, United States. A ghost town is a place where most people have moved away, leaving behind empty buildings and a sense of history.

What is Avery, Oklahoma?

Avery is a former community in Oklahoma. It is now considered a ghost town. This means that very few, if any, people live there anymore. It was once a lively place with a post office.

The Story of Avery's Name

Avery wasn't always called Avery. When it was first founded, it had a different name: Mound City. The town's name changed because of the Eastern Oklahoma Railway. A worker for the railroad, named Avery Turner, helped build the railway through the community. To honor him, the town was renamed Avery.

Post Office History

The community of Avery had its own post office for many years. It opened on September 16, 1902. This was an important service for the people living there. However, the post office eventually closed down. Its last day of operation was August 26, 1957. The closing of the post office often marks a decline in a town's activity.
