About Avigail Sperber

Avigail Sperber was born in Jerusalem, Israel. Her mother was Hannah, and her father was Rabbi Daniel Sperber, a famous scholar who won the Israel Prize for his studies of the Talmud. Avigail went to a religious school for girls called Horev Ulpana. Instead of joining the military, she chose to do national service, which is a way to serve the community.

Her Film Studies and Early Work

In 1998, Avigail finished her studies at the Ma'aleh Film School. Her final student film, Four Men Entered the Grove, won the award for best film in her class. Another documentary film she directed, Yan's Tea House, also won an award at the Haifa International Film Festival.

In 1999, Avigail directed a film called My Sister Benchia. This film told the story of an Ethiopian girl named Benchia-Ariela, whom Avigail met during her national service. Avigail's family later adopted Benchia-Ariela. The film was shown on a major Israeli TV channel, Channel 2.

Activism and Community Work

While studying screenwriting, Avigail Sperber worked on a script about people who are religious and also feel different from others in their community. This work inspired her to create Bat Kol. This organization was the first of its kind in Israel, offering support for religious people who might feel different.

Avigail also helped start Shoval. This group works to encourage understanding and acceptance within religious society. Shoval also runs a helpline for support and advice. These organizations have helped start important conversations in religious communities, encouraging people to talk about and understand these issues.
