About Avigail Sperber
Avigail Sperber was born in Jerusalem, a city in Israel. Her parents are Hannah and Rabbi Daniel Sperber. Her father is a well-known scholar who won the Israel Prize for his studies of the Talmud, which are important Jewish texts.
Avigail went to a religious school for girls called Horev Ulpana. After school, she did Sherut Leumi, which is national service, instead of joining the military.
Her Film Education
In 1998, Avigail finished her studies at the Ma'aleh Film School. Her final project film, called Four Men Entered the Grove, was chosen as the best film in her class. Another film she directed, Yan's Tea House, won an award for best documentary film at the Haifa International Film Festival.
Early Films and Activism
In 1999, Avigail directed a film called My Sister Benchia. This film tells the story of an Ethiopian girl named Benchia-Ariela, whom Avigail met during her national service. Avigail's family later adopted Benchia. This film was shown on a TV channel called Channel 2.
Avigail also worked on the film Campfire. She helped with casting (choosing actors) and was the personal assistant to the director, Yosef Cedar. While doing this, she also studied screenwriting. Her work on a script led her to start Bat Kol. This organization helps people in religious communities and was the first of its kind in Israel. It offers support and a safe space for dialogue. Avigail also started Shoval, another group that works to encourage understanding and acceptance within religious society. These organizations have helped create important conversations in religious communities about supporting all their members.
Later Film Work
Avigail Sperber has worked as a cinematographer on many films. She filmed short movies like Gevald and Metamorphosis, and the documentary Badal. She also worked on the documentary series My Tiny Empire.

This was a documentary about Shalom Nagar, who was the executioner of Adolf Eichmann. The film won the Best Documentary award at the Haifa International Film Festival and was recognized as one of the top films at the IDFA.
