The Story of Avui Newspaper
Avui was first published on April 23, 1976. This date is Saint George's Day, a very special holiday in Catalonia. The company that started the newspaper was called Premsa Catalana.
Early Years and Challenges
When Avui first began, it got financial help from thousands of Catalans. These people paid for subscriptions to the newspaper. However, the paper soon faced money problems. To keep it going, new owners stepped in. The Catalan government worked with two publishing companies to save the newspaper. One of these companies, Grupo Godó, owned a large part of the paper.
Government Support and Changes
The Catalan government often helps newspapers that publish in the Catalan language. This support helps keep the language and culture alive. Avui received funding from the government based on how many copies it sold.
In 2009, Avui changed hands again. A rival newspaper called El Punt bought it. This led to a big change. On July 31, 2011, Avui and El Punt joined together. They created a new newspaper called El Punt Avui.
