The Awarua River is a short river in New Zealand. It flows from a place called Waiuna Lagoon into Big Bay. Big Bay is also known as Awarua Bay. This bay is located at the northern end of Fiordland, a beautiful area in New Zealand.
The river's mouth, where it meets the sea, is at the northern end of Three Mile Beach. This beach is part of Big Bay. Another river, the Dry Awarua River, helps to fill Waiuna Lagoon, which then feeds the Awarua River.
Where is the Awarua River?
The mouth of the Awarua River marks an important boundary. It is the western end of the border between two different regional areas in New Zealand. These are the West Coast Regional Council area and the Southland Regional Council area.
A Historical Boundary
Long ago, this river mouth was also a boundary. From 1853, it separated the Canterbury Province from the Otago Province. These were two of the original provinces in New Zealand's history.
