The Torre de la Malmuerta was a gate tower in the Axerquía wall.

Axerquía was a historic area located just outside the main city walls of Córdoba, Spain. In the past, the main part of Córdoba was called "Medina" by the Arabs and "Villa" by the Christians. Axerquía was the eastern suburb, meaning it was a neighborhood that grew up on the eastern side of the old city. This area also had its own protective walls. Today, Axerquía is still a part of the modern city of Córdoba in Spain.

The beautiful Courtyard houses found in Axerquía were recognized by the World Monuments Fund (WMF) in their 2020 World Monuments Watch. This means they are considered important historical sites that need to be protected.

What is Axerquía?

Axerquía was once a large area that developed outside the main city walls of Córdoba. Imagine a city growing so much that it needed more space! People started building homes and businesses just beyond the original city limits. This new eastern part became known as Axerquía. It was a lively place, full of people and activity, and it eventually got its own set of protective walls.

The Walls of Axerquía

Just like the main city of Córdoba, Axerquía was protected by strong walls. These walls were built to defend the growing suburb from attacks. They helped keep the people and their homes safe. The walls of Axerquía were an important part of the city's defenses, working alongside the older, main city walls. Many parts of these ancient walls can still be seen in Córdoba today, reminding us of its long history.

Why Were the Walls Built?

Walls were very important in ancient cities for protection. As Córdoba grew, the area of Axerquía became a busy suburb. Building walls around it helped to:

  • Protect residents: Keep people safe from invaders or bandits.
  • Control access: Gates in the walls allowed guards to check who was entering or leaving the area.
  • Define the city: The walls clearly marked where the city ended and the countryside began.

Axerquía Today

Today, Axerquía is no longer a separate suburb but an important district within the city of Córdoba. It's a place where history meets modern life. You can still find many historical buildings and charming streets that show its past. The area is known for its traditional courtyards, which are often decorated with beautiful flowers, especially during the famous Patios Festival in May.

Courtyard Houses and World Heritage

The traditional courtyard houses in Axerquía are very special. These homes are built around an open central courtyard, which provides light, air, and a cool place to relax. They are a unique part of Córdoba's architecture and culture.

  • In 2020, the World Monuments Fund included these courtyard houses on their Watch List.
  • This list highlights important historical sites around the world that are at risk or need special attention.
  • Being on this list helps to raise awareness and get support for preserving these unique homes for future generations.
