History of Ayotzinapa
The area known today as Ayotzinapa began as a large farm called a hacienda. This hacienda was owned by a man named Sebastián de Viguri. In 1813, a very important leader named José María Morelos made a speech in nearby Chilpancingo. He presented a document called the Sentimientos de la Nación.
Early Efforts for Social Change
Sebastián de Viguri was deeply moved by Morelos's ideas. Especially, he liked the part that talked about helping poor people. Morelos wanted to increase their wages and improve their lives. He also wanted to get rid of ignorance and theft.
Inspired by these ideas, Viguri decided to act. On September 16, 1818, he gave away some of his Ayotzinapa hacienda land. He gave it to a group of farmers who did not own any land. This allowed them to work the land and support themselves.
Supporting the Community
Viguri also set aside another part of the hacienda. This section included the old main house of the farm. He wanted this land to be managed in a special way. The money earned from crops grown here would help the elderly, sick, and disabled people. This showed his care for the community.
Over many years, the local government of Tixtla de Guerrero managed these lands. They continued to use the land to support those in need. This continued until 1931.
Founding the Teachers' College
In 1931, two teachers, Rodolfo A. Bonilla and Raúl Isidro Burgos, had an idea. They asked the City Council for the land. They wanted to build a special school there. This school would be a "normal school," which trains future teachers.
Before this, the teachers' school was in several rented houses in Tixtla. The City Council agreed to their request. They set aside the land for the new school. This is how the famous Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College was built.
Ayotzinapa in the News
