Ayutuxtepeque is a town in El Salvador. It is a municipality located in the San Salvador department. This town is one of nine that form the San Salvador Metropolitan Area. The name Ayutuxtepeque means "Armadillos Hill" or "Armadillos Mountain".

Ayutuxtepeque is a municipality, which is like a local government area. It became a town in 1824. Later, it was recognized as a "villa" in 1971. Finally, it became a "city" in 1996.
