Azahara Muñoz: A Golf Star from Spain
Azahara Muñoz was born in Málaga, Andalusia, Spain. She started her golf journey as an amateur, meaning she played for fun and experience, not for money. She became very good at golf early on.
Her Early Golf Journey
Azahara had a very successful amateur career. She won the Spanish Amateur title when she was just 14 years old in 2002. She also won the Girls Amateur Championship in 2004 and the British Ladies Amateur in 2009.
She played for Europe in the Junior Solheim Cup team three times. This is a big event for young golfers. Azahara also studied at Arizona State University in the United States. In 2008, she won the NCAA Individual Championship, which is a top college golf title. She helped her college team, the Arizona State Sun Devils, win the NCAA team title in 2009. She even graduated with a degree in psychology!
In her last summer as an amateur, Azahara won two gold medals for Spain at the 2009 Mediterranean Games in Italy. She won both the individual and team events.

Azahara became a professional golfer in September 2009. This means she started playing golf for money. Her first professional win was very exciting! She won the Madrid Ladies Masters in Spain in October 2009. She won in a playoff, which is like an extra sudden-death round, by making an amazing eagle putt. This win earned her €50,000 and a spot on the Ladies European Tour for three years.
First Major LPGA Victory
In 2010, Azahara was named the LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year. This award goes to the best new player on the LPGA Tour. She made the cut in her first eleven events and earned over $400,000.
Her first big win on the LPGA Tour happened in 2012 at the Sybase Match Play Championship in New Jersey. She won her final match against Candie Kung. This victory helped her move up in the world golf rankings.
Winning on the Ladies European Tour
Azahara has won five times on the Ladies European Tour. She won the Lacoste Ladies Open de France twice, in 2013 and 2014. She also won the Andalucia Costa Del Sol Open De España in 2016 and 2017. These wins show her strong performance in Europe.
