The Sybase Match Play Championship was a special golf tournament for women. It was part of the LPGA Tour for three years, from 2010 to 2012. The tournament took place at the Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, New Jersey.

This event was unique because it used a "match play" format. Most golf tournaments use "stroke play," where the golfer with the lowest total score wins. In match play, golfers compete head-to-head in individual matches. The player who wins more holes in a match wins that match.

What is Match Play Golf?

In match play, two golfers play against each other. They try to win each hole. If you take fewer shots on a hole than your opponent, you win that hole.

The player who wins more holes by the end of the match wins the whole match. For example, if you are "3 up with 1 to play," it means you are ahead by three holes with only one hole left. Your opponent cannot catch up, so you win!

The Tournament's Home Course

The Sybase Match Play Championship was always held at the Hamilton Farm Golf Club. This beautiful golf course is located in Gladstone, New Jersey. The course is 6,585 yards long and has a par of 72. This means a skilled golfer is expected to finish the course in 72 shots.

How Players Were Chosen

About 64 top women golfers got to play in this championship. Most players qualified based on their performance in other LPGA Tour events. A few players also received special invitations to join the tournament.

Tournament Schedule

The championship lasted four days, from Thursday to Sunday. It was a six-round event.

  • On Thursday and Friday, players competed in one round each day. This helped narrow down the field from 64 players to just 16.
  • On Saturday and Sunday, there were two rounds each day. This meant lots of exciting golf action in both the morning and afternoon!

Tournament Sponsor

The main sponsor of the tournament was a company called Sybase. They made computer software and services. Sybase also sponsored another golf event before this one. In 2010, Sybase was bought by another company called SAP. SAP decided not to continue sponsoring the tournament after 2012.
