The Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, often called the Azerbaijan SSR, was one of the many republics that made up the large country known as the Soviet Union. It was located in the Caucasus region, in the same area where the independent country of Azerbaijan is today. For many years, from 1920 until 1991, it was a part of the Soviet Union. Its capital city was Baku, which was a very important port city.

A Look Back: When Azerbaijan Was Part of the Soviet Union

The Azerbaijan SSR was officially created on April 28, 1920. For a while, from 1922 to 1936, it was part of a bigger group called the Transcaucasian SFSR. This group also included the Armenian SSR and the Georgian SSR. In December 1922, this Transcaucasian SFSR joined the newly formed Soviet Union.

Later, on November 19, 1990, the Azerbaijan SSR changed its name to the "Republic of Azerbaijan". It stayed part of the Soviet Union for about another year. Then, in 1991, the Soviet Union broke apart, and Azerbaijan became a fully independent country.

What Was It Like?

The Azerbaijan SSR had its own flag and a special symbol called a coat of arms. These symbols showed that it was part of the Soviet Union but also had its own identity. The country's motto was "Workers of the world, unite!" This was a famous saying used by many socialist countries.

The capital city, Baku, was a busy place. It was known for its oil industry and was a major center for culture and trade. The country also had its own national anthem, a special song that people sang to show their pride.

During its time as a Soviet republic, the Azerbaijan SSR had different leaders. One of the early leaders was Nariman Narimanov, who was in charge from 1921 to 1922. Later, towards the end of the Soviet era, Hasan Hasanov was a leader from 1990 to 1991.

In 1991, just before it became independent, the Azerbaijan SSR had a population of about 7 million people. Its total area was about 86,600 square kilometers. This makes it a medium-sized country.
