Børge Ring (born February 17, 1921 – died December 27, 2018) was a talented Danish artist. He was known for writing, directing, and animating short films. His work won him many important awards.
In 1978, his short film Oh My Darling won a top prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Later, in 1984, his film Anna & Bella won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. This is one of the biggest awards in movies!

Life and Early Career
Growing Up and Family
Børge Ring was born in a town called Ribe in Denmark. His father, Oluf Ring, was a famous composer. Later, Børge's family moved to a different part of Denmark called Funen.
Børge was married to Joanika, who was a sculptor. They had two children together. Børge Ring lived a long life and passed away in 2018 when he was 97 years old.
From Music to Animation
Before he became famous for animation, Børge Ring was a jazz musician. He played the contrabassoon and guitar in several bands.
In 1947, Børge Ring and his friend Arne Rønde Christensen started their own cartoon studio. It was in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. They began by making animated commercials.
A few years later, in 1952, Ring moved to the Netherlands. There, he worked for a company called Toonder Studios. He stayed there for many years, until 1973. After that, he moved to London to work for Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Award-Winning Films
"Oh My Darling"
Børge Ring's 1978 short film, Oh My Darling, was a big success. It won the Best Short Film award at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival in France. This film was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1979.
In the United States, this short film was shown on TV. It was part of a show called Jokebook.
"Anna & Bella"
In 1984, Børge Ring directed another amazing short film called Anna & Bella. This film won the Best Animated Short Film award at the 58th Academy Awards in 1985. Winning an Oscar is a huge achievement in the film world!
Other Animation Projects
Børge Ring worked on many other interesting projects. He helped create the introduction for the 1983 movie Curse of the Pink Panther. In 1986, he even composed a flute song for a Danish cartoon called Valhalla.
He also contributed to some well-known animated works. These include It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (from 1966), Heavy Metal (from 1981), and We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story (from 1993).
Later Life and Awards
Børge Ring received special honors later in his life. In 2003, he became a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. This is a very important award in the Netherlands.
In 2012, the main award of the Danish Animation Society was renamed in his honor. It is now called The Børge Ring Award. In the same year, he also won the Winsor McCay Award. This award celebrates people who have made a big difference in animation.
In 2014, Børge Ring's autobiography was published. This means he wrote a book about his own life story.
