Băilești is a city in Dolj County, Romania. It is located in the Oltenia region. In 2021, about 15,928 people lived there. The city also manages a nearby village called Balasan.

Discovering Băilești's Location
Băilești is located in the western part of the Wallachian Plain. It sits by the Balasan River. This river flows into the mighty Danube about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the city.
Băilești is in the southern part of Dolj County. It's about 57 kilometers (35 miles) southwest of Craiova. Craiova is the main city of the county. Băilești is also 32 kilometers (20 miles) northeast of Calafat, a port city on the Danube River.

Băilești was first mentioned in official papers on January 4, 1536. This was during the time of Prince Radu Paisie. However, the documents show that the town was already old. It existed even when Voivode Mircea the Elder ruled.
During World War I, 156 people from Băilești bravely fought and died. In 1924, a sculptor named Ioan Iordănescu built a special monument. It honors these heroes of Băilești. During World War II, 108 more citizens of Băilești lost their lives in battle.
In 2001, Băilești was officially named a municipality. This means it became a more important type of city. The city has been growing in recent years. Many new shopping centers have been built. Old buildings and banks have also been made new again.
