About B. Vittalacharya

His Early Life and Journey

B. Vittalacharya was born on January 28, 1920, in Udayavara, Udupi. He was the seventh child in his family. From a young age, he loved dramas, traditional plays like Bayalata, and Yakshagana performances. His father was a kind doctor who treated people for free.

Vittalacharya only studied until third grade. When he was nine, he left home to find his own way. He worked many small jobs and eventually bought a restaurant. He was very good at running the restaurant.

Becoming a Film Director

Later, he joined the Quit India Movement, a big effort to gain India's freedom from British rule. He was put in jail for this. After he was released, he gave his restaurant to his younger brother. He then started a "Touring Cinema" (a mobile movie theater) with his friend D. Shankar Singh.

He managed these mobile cinemas and learned a lot about making movies by watching every film they showed. In 1944, he married Jayalakshmi Acharya.

With his friends, he moved to Mysore and started a film company called Mahatma Pictures. They made 18 Kannada movies between 1944 and 1953. Some of their successful films included Naga Kanya and Jagan Mohini. Over time, some partners left, and only D. Shankar Singh and Vittalacharya remained.

Making Movies for Everyone

In 1953, Vittalacharya started his own company, Vittal Productions. His first film as director and producer for his new company was Rajya Lakshmi. In 1954, he made Kanyadhanam. He wanted to remake this film in Telugu, so he moved to Madras and lived there for the rest of his life.

After making two more Kannada movies, he focused on directing and producing only Telugu and Tamil films. He also directed movies for other producers. He was famous for creating exciting and magical stories on screen.
