The Babri Mosque (Urdu: بابری مسجد, Hindi: बाबरी मस्जिद), also known as the Mosque of Babur, was an important mosque located in Ayodhya, India. It was built in the 16th century by order of Babur, who was the first emperor of the Mughal Empire in India.

A Place of History and Beliefs

The Babri Mosque stood in Ayodhya for many centuries. This site was very important to both Hindus and Muslims.

Hindu Beliefs About the Site

Many Hindus believed that the land where the mosque stood was the exact birthplace of Rama, a very important Hindu deity. They believed that a temple dedicated to Lord Rama had been there before the mosque was built.

The Mosque's Construction

The mosque was built in 1527. It was a significant example of Mughal architecture. For hundreds of years, it served as a place of worship for Muslims.

A Disputed Site

Over time, the land where the Babri Mosque stood became a place of disagreement.

The Legal Case

For many years, there was a long legal case about who owned the land. Both Hindu and Muslim groups claimed the site. The court had to decide what should happen to this important place.

The Demolition of the Mosque

In 1992, a large gathering of people arrived in Ayodhya. During this event, the Babri Mosque was sadly destroyed. This event led to much tension and unrest in India.

Court Decisions About the Site

After the mosque was destroyed, the legal case continued. On September 27, 2010, a court in India, the Allahabad High Court, made a decision. The court said that the mosque had been built on top of a structure that was not Islamic. The court decided to divide the land into three parts.
