A Glimpse into Bacerac's History

Long ago, the land where Bacerac now stands was home to the Opata people. They were the original inhabitants of this region.

Later, in 1645, a Jesuit missionary named Cristóbal García arrived. He founded a new settlement and named it Santa María de Bacerac. The name "Bacerac" comes from the Opata language. It means "place where water is seen," which likely refers to a local spring or river.

The main way people in Bacerac make a living is through farming. The crops grown here are mostly used to support another important activity: raising cattle. There are about 10,000 cows in the area, making cattle ranching a big part of the local economy.
