Early Life and Education
Baciro Djá was born on January 31, 1973. He studied social psychology at the University of Havana in Cuba, finishing in 1996. In 1998, he earned a master's degree in psychology from the Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada in Lisbon, Portugal. Before becoming a politician, from 2006 to 2008, Djá helped coordinate a reform project for defense and safety. He also served as the president of the Institute of National Defense.
Political Career
In 2008, Baciro Djá was elected as a member of parliament. This means he became part of the group of people who make laws for the country. In the same year, he was chosen to be the Minister of Youth and Sports. A minister is a high-ranking official in the government.
Later, in 2011 and 2012, he worked as the Minister of National Defence. In 2012, he decided to run for president as an independent candidate, meaning he was not part of a major political party at that time. He was also the third vice-president of the PAIGC, which was the main political party in Guinea-Bissau's parliament. Baciro Djá is known for being able to speak Portuguese, French, and Spanish fluently.
Becoming Prime Minister
Baciro Djá first became Prime Minister on August 20, 2015. However, he resigned on September 9, 2015, after only 20 days in the job. He resigned because the country's Supreme Court ruled that his appointment was against the constitution. The court said that the parliament was not properly asked for their opinion before he was made Prime Minister.
He became Prime Minister again on May 27, 2016. This time, he served until November 18, 2016.
Later Political Activities
On November 20, 2016, Baciro Djá was removed from the PAIGC party. The party said he had not followed their rules when he tried to become Prime Minister.
In 2019, he ran for president again. He was the candidate for a group called the 'Patriotic Front of National Salvation' in the 2019 Guinea-Bissau presidential election. He finished in sixth place, receiving 1.28% of the votes.
