The Brook Road Inn is a special old building located at 1171 Brook Road in Goshen, New Hampshire. It used to be called the Backside Inn. This historic inn now offers a place for people to stay.

The building itself is an old farmhouse from 1835. It's famous for being one of many "plank frame" houses in that area. Because of its history, the inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This means it's an important historical site.

About the Brook Road Inn

The Brook Road Inn is found in a quiet, countryside part of northeastern Goshen. It sits just west of where Brook Road and Dubois Road meet. The main part of the inn is a one-and-a-half-story building. A larger, two-story section has been added to it.

Building Design

The original part of the house was built using thick wooden planks. These planks are about 3 inches (7.6 cm) thick and form the walls. The outside of the building is covered with wooden clapboards. The roof is shaped like a triangle, which is called a gabled roof.

You can see gabled dormers sticking out from the front of the roof. There's also a shed-roof dormer at the back. A porch stretches across the front of the newer, larger section of the building. It also goes along part of one side.

The front of the larger section has three main window areas. It has a mix of older and newer windows. The main entrance to the inn is located in the leftmost window area.

A Look at Its History

The oldest part of the Brook Road Inn was built in 1835. It started out as a simple farmhouse. Back then, it had a small kitchen area where the bigger section is now. This house is a great example of the many "plank-framed" homes in the area.

In the 1920s, the building was changed. It became a lodge for people who enjoyed hunting. Later, in the 1950s or 1960s, the larger section of the building was greatly expanded. The inn's old name, "Backside Inn," came from its location. It's on the "back side" of the nearby Mount Sunapee resort area.
