History of Bacona
Bacona has an interesting history, even though it's a small place today.
Early Days and the Post Office
Bacona got its name from its very first postmaster, a person named Cyrus Bacon. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office, which is where people send and receive mail.
The Bacona post office started operating on May 24, 1897. It served the community for many years. However, it closed down on January 31, 1934.
In 1915, Bacona was at its busiest. About 70 people lived there.
Local Businesses
During its active years, Bacona also had a local business. A sawmill was in operation there. A sawmill is a factory where logs are cut into lumber, which is wood used for building. This sawmill was owned by Peter Hoffman and provided jobs for eight men in the area.
Why Bacona Changed
After 1915, the number of people living in Bacona started to go down. One big reason for this change was a huge event called the Tillamook Burn. This was a series of massive forest fires that happened in the area, especially in 1933. These fires caused a lot of damage and made it harder for the community to thrive.
Today, Bacona has very few people living there. It is a quiet reminder of its past.
