The Bagley Brook is a small stream in Shropshire, England. It flows into the River Severn in the town of Shrewsbury. Even though it's a small stream, its path has changed a lot over time. This is because of all the buildings and developments in the area. Because of these changes, many people don't even know the brook exists or where it flows. However, its name is still used for an area in Shrewsbury called Bagley. This area is an official electoral division and a town ward.

Where Does Bagley Brook Flow?

The Bagley Brook is about 2.0 km (1.2 mi) long. Its journey starts near the Ellesmere Road in Shrewsbury. This area used to be part of the River Severn's old path. The brook first flows southeast, then turns south. This starting area is a marshy place. It is also a special protected area called an SSSI, which stands for Site of Special Scientific Interest. This means it's important for its natural features.

Hidden Journey of the Brook

After leaving the marshy area, the brook flows through a narrow cut. This cut is just east of the railway line that goes from Shrewsbury to Crewe. It then passes between new houses and a coal yard.

Eventually, the Bagley Brook goes into a long underground pipe. This type of pipe is called a culvert. A culvert is like a tunnel that carries water under roads or buildings. The brook stays hidden underground until it reaches the River Severn.

Where Bagley Brook Meets the River Severn

The Bagley Brook finally joins the River Severn at Chester Street in Shrewsbury. This is near a public building called the Gateway. In the past, there was a bridge over the brook at Chester Street. But now, the water flows completely underground. You can't see the brook at all when it enters the River Severn at this point.

How Bagley Brook Relates to Flooding

The path of the Bagley Brook follows an old course of the River Severn. This old path was cut off from the main river during the last ice age. Because of this, when the River Severn floods very badly, the area around the Bagley Brook can also get flooded. For example, in November 2000, a large area of about 20 hectares (49 acres) around the brook was flooded. This shows how the brook's path is still connected to the larger river system, even though much of it is now hidden.
