The Bagot Community is a special place for Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is located in Ludmilla, which is a northern suburb of the city of Darwin. It's a vibrant community with a rich history.

Bagot Community was first set up in 1938. Back then, it was called the Bagot Aboriginal Reserve. Aboriginal people who lived in another place called the Kahlin Compound moved here. Sometimes, people also called it the Bagot Road Aboriginal Reserve.

Later, in 1979, the community became self-governing. This means the people living there started to manage their own affairs. An Aboriginal Community Council began to run things. From then on, it was known as the Bagot Aboriginal Community, but most people just call it the Bagot Community.

History of Bagot Community

The Bagot Aboriginal Reserve was created in 1938. This happened after all Aboriginal residents from the Kahlin Compound were moved to this new area. A special home for children, called the Retta Dixon Home, was also located at the reserve.

In 1954, something exciting happened. Twenty-two boys from the reserve traveled all the way to Toowoomba. There, they performed a traditional Aboriginal dance, called a corroboree, for Queen Elizabeth II. This was a very important event.

In the late 1970s, the land of the Reserve was given back to Aboriginal people. This was a big step towards self-management. After this, it became known as the Bagot Aboriginal Community.

Today, the Bagot Community is managed by an organization called Bagot Community Incorporated (BCI). This group works to make sure the community runs smoothly.

The community faces some challenges. For example, during the wet season, which is a time of heavy rain, the number of people living in Bagot can grow a lot. This can lead to homes becoming very crowded.

In 2013, there was talk about making Bagot a regular suburb of Darwin. The Northern Territory Government and another group, the Larrakia Development Corporation, had plans for this. However, the Bagot Community Council wanted to keep control of their community. For a long time, the Larrakia people were the main group at Bagot. But by 2012, most families living there were from other Aboriginal groups.

The community also celebrates its culture. In 2014, a special event called "The Bagot Festival" was held. It was part of the Darwin Festival. People enjoyed music, dance, and art. In 2015, a fun painting project took place. Many houses in the community were decorated with beautiful murals.

From 2018 to 2019, the Northern Territory Government worked on a project to improve homes and services in Bagot. This was done through their Town Camps Futures Unit.

Community Services

The Bagot Clinic is an important health center in the community. It provides primary health care services to the residents. It is located on Bagot Road.
