Bahía Posesión is about 37 kilometers (23 miles) south of Pali-Aike National Park. This park is famous because it's one of the oldest places where humans lived in the Americas. People lived there as far back as 10,000 years ago, in places like the Pali-Aike crater lava tube.
The 1974 Oil Spill
In 1974, a very large oil tanker named VLCC Metula had an accident in Bahía Posesión. The ship was on its way to Quintero Bay in Chile when it ran aground, meaning it hit the bottom of the sea.
Because of this accident, the Metula lost about 60,000 tons of crude oil into the bay. This was a huge amount of oil. The spill caused serious harm to the animals and plants living in the area. It took a lot of effort to clean up the oil and help the environment recover.
