Bahubali means "One With Strong Arms." He is a very important figure in Jainism. Bahubali was the son of Rishabhanatha, who was the first tirthankara (a great spiritual teacher) of Jainism. He was also the younger brother of Bharata Chakravartin.
Bahubali is famous for his incredible meditation. He stood still for a whole year in a special posture called kayotsarga. During this time, climbing plants even grew around his legs! After this long meditation, Bahubali achieved Kevala Gyana. This means he gained complete knowledge and understanding of everything.
The Giant Gommateshwara Statue
Bahubali is also known by other names like Kammateswara and Gommateshwara. These names come from the huge Gommateshwara statue built to honor him. This amazing statue was created around 981 A.D. by a minister and commander named Chavundaraya from the Ganga dynasty.
What Makes the Statue Special?
The Gommateshwara statue is a 57-foot (17 m) monolith. This means it was carved from a single, giant piece of rock! It stands tall on a hill in Shravanabelagola, which is in the Hassan district of Karnataka state, India. It is one of the biggest free-standing statues in the world.
