The Baie du Canot Rouge is a lovely bay found in Quebec, Canada. It is part of the large Taureau Reservoir. This area is an unorganized territory called Baie-de-la-Bouteille. It belongs to the Matawinie Regional County Municipality (MRC) in the Lanaudière region.

For a long time, the main activity here was forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. Later, people started coming for fun and holidays. Today, this bay is very popular for pleasure boating and other water activities.

The bay's surface usually freezes over from November to April. However, it's safest to walk or play on the ice from mid-December until the end of March.

Discovering the Bay's Location

The Baie du Canot Rouge is about 6.0 kilometres (3.7 mi) long. It stretches towards the southwest. You can find it on the northeast side of the big Taureau Reservoir. This bay also sits right on the western edge of the Mastigouche Wildlife Reserve.

Water flows into the bay from different places. On its western side, it gets water from the René stream. From the east, water comes in from the outlet of Lac de la Pomme.

What's in a Name?

The name "Baie du Canot Rouge" means "Bay of the Red Canoe." This name was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. It was added to the Place Names Bank by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This commission is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
