Balché facts for kids
Balché is a special traditional drink. It was enjoyed by the ancient Maya people. They lived in what is now Mexico and parts of Central America. Even today, many Yucatec Maya people still drink Balché.
This unique drink is made from the bark of a tree called Lonchocarpus violaceus. The bark is soaked in honey and water. Then, it is left to ferment, which means it changes over time. A similar drink, called xtabentún, is made from honey from a special flower called a morning glory (Turbina corymbosa).
Balché in Maya History
The ancient Maya used Balché in their ceremonies and daily life. It was an important part of their culture. The drink was believed to help people connect with their spiritual world.
After the Spanish arrived and conquered the Maya lands, they tried to stop the Maya from drinking Balché. The Spanish even destroyed the special trees used to make the drink. However, the Maya people kept their traditions alive. They continued to make and enjoy Balché in secret.
Today, Balché is still a symbol of Maya heritage. It shows how the Maya people have kept their culture strong through many years.
