Balcolyn is a small area, or suburb, located in New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the City of Lake Macquarie. Balcolyn sits on a piece of land that sticks out into Lake Macquarie. You can find it east of the town called Morisset.
A Look Back: Balcolyn's Past
Long ago, many Casuarina trees, also known as she-oak trees, grew along the water's edge in Balcolyn. These trees were important for the timber industry. Their wood was very good for making roof shingles.
A place called Shingle Splitters Point was used by workers. These workers were called "shingle splitters" because they split wood into shingles. This point was a safe place for boats to anchor. It was also used to load timber onto boats.
Fun at the Crusaders Campsite
The Crusader Union of Australia runs a special place in Balcolyn. It is a Christian education campsite. This campsite is located right on the shores of Lake Macquarie.
The campsite can host up to 112 guests at a time. It has many things to do for sports and fun activities. There is a jetty, which is like a small pier, for sailing. You can also go canoeing, paddle boarding, and fishing there.
