Baldwin, Colorado facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Baldwin is a historic town that started in the late 1800s. It's found about 8.5 miles southwest of Crested Butte, Colorado. Even though Baldwin isn't famous as a ghost town, many of its first buildings are still standing today. Most of the land where these buildings are located is now owned by private individuals.

Why Baldwin Started

Baldwin began because of a big discovery! People found lots of coal at the bottom of a mountain. This mountain was once called Mount Carbon. Today, it's known as Carbon Peak. This discovery brought many people to the area, hoping to find work and build a new life.

How Baldwin Became a Ghost Town

Baldwin became a ghost town because the railroad left. The Denver and South Park railroad used to serve the town. When the railroad stopped coming to Baldwin, it became very hard to transport the coal and other goods. This made it difficult for businesses to operate. People started to move away, looking for work elsewhere. Eventually, the town was mostly abandoned.
