Becoming Count
Baldwin became the Count of Flanders when his father died in 1111. He was still quite young at the time. His mother, Clementia of Burgundy, was a very strong woman. She had a lot of influence over him. Baldwin tried to make his own decisions. But his mother still had a big say in things.
Baldwin's Personality and Actions
Baldwin was a very energetic young man. He often acted quickly without thinking. He really disliked Henry I of England. Because he was new to ruling, Baldwin asked his older cousin, Charles the Good, for advice. In 1118, Baldwin helped arrange a marriage for Charles. Charles married Margaret of Clermont, who was an important heiress.
In 1118, Baldwin led his army into Normandy. He attacked and took goods from many towns there.

In 1105, Baldwin married Hawise of Brittany. She was the daughter of Duke Alan IV of Brittany. Baldwin was twelve years old, and Hawise was nine. They later divorced in 1110. Baldwin never married again after that. He and Hawise did not have any children.
His Final Days
In 1118, Baldwin was fighting in a battle. It was called the Battle of Bures-en-Bray. He was fighting against Henry I of England. Baldwin was helping Louis VI of France in this fight. During the battle, Baldwin was badly hurt. A lance hit him on the head.
He died from his injuries in 1119. Before he passed away, Baldwin named his cousin Charles as his heir. This meant Charles would become the next count. Baldwin died on June 17, 1119. After his death, Charles became the new Count of Flanders.
