Baldwin of Antioch (died September 17, 1176) was a brave Frankish knight and a skilled general who served the Byzantine Empire. He fought alongside the Byzantines during their wars against the Seljuk Turks. Baldwin was the son of Princess Constance of Antioch and Raymond of Poitiers. He was also related to the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Komnenos, who was his brother-in-law.

Baldwin was a very trusted friend and advisor to Emperor Manuel. He was also the only one of Manuel's top commanders who came from Western Europe. He played an important role in the Byzantine army.

Baldwin's Role in Battle

Baldwin was a key leader in the Byzantine Empire's army. He commanded the right side of the forces. This part of the army was in charge of protecting the supplies and equipment during a battle. Many of the soldiers under his command were mercenaries from Western Europe.

The Battle of Myriokephalon

On September 17, 1176, Baldwin fought in a major battle called the Battle of Myriokephalon. As Emperor Manuel's army marched through a narrow mountain pass called Tzibritze Pass, the Seljuk Turks suddenly attacked.

Baldwin's Final Stand

Baldwin quickly led a cavalry charge to push the Turks back from the hills. This was a brave attempt to fight back. However, Baldwin and his men were surrounded by the enemy. They fought bravely but were all killed in the battle.
