Balkavi Bairagi (born Nand Ramdas Bairagi; 10 February 1931 – 13 May 2018) was a famous Indian poet, songwriter for films, and politician. He was also known as Rastrakavi Balkavi Bairagi, which means 'national poet'.
He wrote many poems in Hindi and also in Malvi, a special dialect spoken in the Malwa region of India. His Malvi songs, like the popular 'Panihari' (meaning A woman carrying water), helped bring this local language into the main world of Hindi poetry. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Madhya Pradesh from 1998 to 2004.

Early Life and Education
Bairagi was born in Manasa. His family belonged to the Vaishnav Brahmin (Bairagi) group. His original name was Nand Ramdas Bairagi. People started calling him "Balkavi" (meaning 'child poet') because he wrote some amazing poems when he was still young. He later earned a master's degree in Hindi from Vikram University in Ujjain.
Literary Career: A Poet and Lyricist
Balkavi Bairagi wrote many poems in Hindi. He especially enjoyed writing for children. One of his most famous poems is "Jhar gaye paat, bisar gayi tehni" (meaning The leaves have fallen, the branches have been forgotten). Many Hindi poets consider this poem a true masterpiece.
He also wrote songs for about twelve Hindi films. Some of his most well-known work as a lyricist can be heard in the movies Reshma aur Shera and Ankahee.
Political Career: Serving the People
Balkavi Bairagi was a politician who belonged to the Indian National Congress party. He was elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Manasa in 1968 and again in 1980.
During his time in the Madhya Pradesh Government, he held several important positions. He served as:
- Minister of State for Information
- Minister of Language and Tourism
- Minister of Food and Civil Supplies
He also served as a Member of the Lok Sabha (another part of India's Parliament) from 1984 to 1989. He represented the Mandsaur area during this time. Later, he became a Rajya Sabha member from 1998 to 2004.

Death and Legacy
Balkavi Bairagi passed away peacefully in his sleep on 13 May 2018, at the age of 87. He is remembered as one of the most popular and respected Hindi poets. His two sons and many grandchildren continue his family's legacy.
