Ball gauge facts for kids
A ball gauge is a special tool used in the game of cricket. It helps the umpires make sure the cricket ball is the correct size. Every cricket ball must fit certain measurements set by the Laws of Cricket. This tool looks a bit like a pair of handcuffs with two connected rings.
What is a Ball Gauge?
A ball gauge is an important piece of equipment for cricket umpires. Its main job is to check if a cricket ball is too big or too small. It also helps to see if the ball has changed its shape during a game. Keeping the ball's size correct is fair for both teams.
How Does a Ball Gauge Work?
The ball gauge has two different rings. Each ring has a specific size.
- One ring is for the maximum size. This means the ball must be able to pass through this ring. If it can't, the ball is too big. This is sometimes called the 'GO gauge'.
- The other ring is for the minimum size. The ball should not be able to pass through this ring. If it does, the ball is too small. This is called the 'NOGO gauge'.
When is a Ball Replaced?
Umpires use the ball gauge regularly during a match. If a ball is checked and:
- It cannot pass through the maximum size ring (it's too big).
- It passes through the minimum size ring (it's too small).
- It has become a strange shape.
If any of these things happen, the umpires must replace the ball. They try to find an old ball that has been used for about the same number of overs in a past game. This helps keep the game fair, as a new ball behaves differently from an old, worn one.
