The Ballardong people are an Indigenous group from the Noongar nation. They live in the southwestern part of Western Australia. They are one of the many traditional owners of this land.

Ballardong Country

The Ballardong people's traditional lands cover a large area, about 27,000 square kilometers (10,500 square miles). Their country stretches from the Avon River in the north. It goes east towards towns like Tammin and Bencubbin.

To the west, their land reaches the Darling Scarp, a long line of hills. In the south, their country includes areas around Pingelly and Wickepin. This vast area was their home for thousands of years.

Traditional Economy

The Ballardong people were skilled in using the resources of their land. They were known for mining and quarrying stones. They would carefully choose special stones from places like Kalannie Boyangoora.

These stones were then shaped and sharpened into important tools. They made knives and spears with many sharp points. These tools were essential for hunting, gathering, and daily life.

Ballardong Language

The Ballardong people speak a dialect of the Noongar language. Here are a few words from their language:

  • chungar - means "Brown man"
  • doorda - means "tame dog"
  • maman - means "father"
  • unkan - means "mother"
  • yockine - means "wild dog"
