Balloch is a small, unnamed community. It is located in the southwestern part of the town of Cornish, New Hampshire, in the United States. The community gets its name from the Balloch Farm. This farm was first owned by James Balloch (1761-1840). Later, his son William Balloch (1820-1893) took over the farm. Balloch was also the site of a small train station. The Boston & Maine Railroad built this station in the 1890s. Sadly, a freight train crash destroyed the station on February 12, 1928.
History of Balloch
James Balloch started the Balloch Farm shortly after he came to the United States in 1790. In 1796, he married Sarah Chase. She was from the well-known Chase family in Cornish. Under his son, William, the farm grew and became very successful. It produced a lot of milk for local creameries.
The Sullivan County Railroad built its tracks through the farm in 1849. William Balloch even worked as a contractor for the railroad project. Starting in the 1890s, the Balloch station was built. This station helped ship milk directly from the farm to places that processed it, like the Bellows Falls Cooperative Creamery in Bellows Falls.
Balloch Today
At one time, Balloch was known for the "Balloch's Crossing Farm & Forge" sign. This sign was at the historic Balloch Farm. The farm used to be the home of North Star Canoe Rentals.
The railroad still runs through Balloch today. It is now operated by the New England Central Railroad. You can see daily trains passing through Balloch. These include freight trains from the New England Central Railroad itself. Freight trains from Pan Am Railways also use these tracks. Plus, the daily Vermonter passenger train, run by Amtrak, goes through Balloch.
