Ballon was once a small town, known in France as a commune. It is located in the region called Pays de la Loire, which is in the Sarthe department in western France. On January 1, 2016, Ballon joined with another commune, Saint-Mars-sur-Ballon, to form a new, larger commune called Ballon-Saint-Mars.

Ballon is a place with a long history. It's known for its old castle, which has a strong tower called a "donjon." This tower reminds us of the many years Ballon has been around.

Ballon is in the western part of France. It's part of the Sarthe department, which is like a county. The Sarthe department is in the Pays de la Loire region, which is one of the big areas that make up France.

How Did Ballon Change?

For many years, Ballon was its own commune. A commune is the smallest type of administrative area in France, similar to a town or parish. But in 2016, Ballon merged with a nearby commune, Saint-Mars-sur-Ballon. This created a new, bigger commune called Ballon-Saint-Mars. This kind of merger happens sometimes to make local government more efficient.
