Rubus illecebrosus is a cool plant known for its bright red, tasty fruits! It's often called the balloon berry or strawberry raspberry because its fruits look a bit like a mix between a strawberry and a raspberry. This plant originally comes from Japan, where it's known as バライチゴ (roseberry). It has also become quite popular in some European countries, like Lithuania. You might even find it growing wild in parts of Canada, the United States, and South America, even though it's not native there.
What Does the Strawberry Raspberry Look Like?
The strawberry raspberry is a thorny bush that can grow quite tall. It can reach up to 150 centimeters (about 5 feet) high. Its leaves are made up of several smaller leaflets, arranged like feathers.
Flowers and Fruits
This plant produces beautiful flowers, either one at a time or in small groups of two or three. Each flower has five petals that can be up to 18 millimeters (about 0.7 inches) long. These petals are longer than those of many other plants in the same family.
The fruits are also quite special for this type of plant. They are unusually large, oblong, and bright red. Each fruit can be up to 2 centimeters (about 0.8 inches) long. Inside, they are made up of many tiny, juicy parts, usually between 50 and 100 of them!
